The Doomsday Clock moved to 100 seconds to midnight the closest symbolic point from an apocalypse since 1953.
The decision was made on Thursday by The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, which announced it from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. on Thursday.
"We argued that the global situation was abnormal," Rachel Bronson, president and CEO of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, said during the press conference of the decision to keep last year's Clock the same, but noted that nuclear and climate situations are "worsening."
Sharon Squassoni, Georgetown University professor and member of the Science and Security Board of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists, noted how extreme the nuclear weapons situation has become. She cited the recent collapse of the Iran nuclear deal, the reemergence of North Korea's nuclear capabilities and the continued buildout of weapons from the U.S., Russia and China.
"In sum, the situation is extremely dangerous and demands an emergency response," Squassoni said.
Sivan Kartha, a senior scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute, noted that time is running out for the planet to get to the emissions goals set at the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. "Emissions need to head towards zero," Kartha said, adding, "there's no question this is an emergency."
The Clock, which warns of impending disasters and takes into account nuclear weapons, rising geopolitical tensions, as well as changes to the environment, was created in 1947 at the beginning of the arms race between the U.S. and the then-Soviet Union.
Since 2007, climate change has been a factor in the groups' decisions.

“as well as changes to the environment,”
Added in the past 20 years or so to strip people of their freedoms and money.
“We’ve got provisions and lots of beer.”
There’s an article today in the WSJ (paywalled) that says, in effect, let’s get rid of this silly Cold War relic.
It might have had some relevance when the original a-bomb scientists were around but they never intended it to be a political gimmick which, of course, it is now.
Excellent! One of my favorite quotes from “Watchmen.”
and by the way- we can know the time- (more than 1007 years from now minimum)- the bible says noone can know the day or the hour, not the time-
There will be biblical prophecy unfolding- indicating the the time of the tribulation is getting close- There are certain things that must come to pass first, that haven’t yet- that will point to an impending tribulation- The bible doesn’t tell us to simply bury our heads in the sand because we can’t know the day or the hour- infact it tells us to be vigilant and watch for certain things to come to pass first- It tells us in advance what to watch for so we are not unprepared for when thigns do actually begin-
But one htign is certain- beyond a shadow of a doubt- we have at the very least, 1007 more years to go as a world-
From the article...
"The Clock, which warns of impending disasters and takes into account nuclear weapons, rising geopolitical tensions, as well as changes to the environment, was created in 1947 at the beginning of the arms race between the U.S. and the then-Soviet Union."
Our world is being ran by people with the mental maturity of a 14 year old girl. All whining, hyperbole, and drama. Where are all the adults!?
The Doomsday clock is a crock ...
A lot of basement fallout shelters did double duty as rathskellers and often the entire cellar was finished out as a game room or den.
I also remember the morality debates about keeping out neighbors who hadn’t built their own shelters.
Twilight Zone dealt with this. The real dilemma came when the invading neighbors learned the radar blips were false & there was no danger of nuclear war.
Followed by a cold war at neighborhood level.

100 seconds=11.36 years. Or 4 years. Or by 2030. Or by 2050
LOL! Yep. Probably. ;)
What a relief. Now we don’t have to worry about the world dying of climate change in 11 years.
Ah yes, "The Shelter"....a perfect dichotomy between Liberals and Conservatives, Liberals demanding that those who were responsible bail out those who weren't.
Saw that episode the other night lol- recorded about 40 of the hsows- still workign my way through them lol
That clock keeps moving us closer to nuclear annihilation.
Throw it away, save the world.
“I would only agree that a symbolic clock is as nourishing to the intellect as a photograph of oxygen to a drowning man.” - Dr. Manhattan
This was started to measure the possibility of a nuclear war. Doesn’t it take longer than that for a missile to get to USA soil?
Yawn....
I have to hand it to them: this clock is a fantastic PR gimmick, as is their name: “Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.” “Look how close midnight is. We’re all gonna die!” “We have to believe it, they’re SCIENTISTS!”
Check the resumes of their president and CEO and the member of their “Science and Security Board,” and note the complete absence of any science background.
It’s an absolute load of malarkey, but it is treated as Gospel.
