Tacos, anyone? Iguanas are falling
Miami Herald ^ | January 22, 2020 | CARLOS FRÍAS

Mango season may be months away, but if you live in South Florida today, your trees may be ripe for the picking — of iguanas.

Iguana meat, dubbed “chicken of the trees,” started showing up on Facebook Marketplace overnight, as the temperature dipped into the 40s. The green iguanas are an invasive species, stunned lifeless by South Florida’s occasional cold snaps, and they die if the chilly weather holds. The National Weather Service even tweeted to watch out for falling iguanas.

That apparently makes them easy pickings for backyard harvesters.

I checked around here early this morning when temperature was about 40 degrees but didn't see any iguanas lying on the ground. I think this weather just stunned them with only a few deaths, unlike ten years ago when we had temps in the 30s and low 40s for almost a week. At that time almost all the iguanas froze to death.

If they are not killed off this winter like ten years ago, I am thinking of hunting them with a blowgun just to be different. Using an air rifle can get you trouble with the police and the iguanas around my lake probably won't let you get close enough to use a noose on the end of a pole as the Iguana Man uses. That sort of leaves blowguns as an option.

Hey, Mom!, I found an iguana in the back yard tree. Can I keep him?

Again, someone could get the wrong idea if they saw me with a crossbow. In fact, the machete I plan to use to dispatch the iguanas, I will keep in a large plastic bag out of sight until I finally use it.

My wife doesn’t like the idea of me cooking iguana tails so first I will pick up a gator tail to cook to get her used to the idea.

Iguanas...... who gives a damn about the iguanas.

It’s the pythons man. They can’t tolerate the cold either

Perhaps they’ll die.

I’d try an iguana taco or burrito.

Maybe a combination platter.

It’s too bad that the cause de la celebrity is no longer global cooling.

I find it fascinating that nature could fix the problem of invasive species with an out of character week long cold spell.

I mean think how much better off FL would be with a 95% reduction in iguanas and pythons.

I don’t think this cold snap will last long enough to make much of a dent in the invasive species here. Ten years ago, almost all iguanas were wiped out and it took about 5 years before they became noticeable again. Now they are all over. If I look out my window (not today) I almost always see one of those dinosaurs walking around. That’s why I want to hunt them and eat them. Readily available meat.

I was talking about the possibility of hunting and eating iguana with my wife on our recent Caribbean cruise and a guy behind us turned around and told us he ate iguana and said it was terrific.
