Two dozen people have been arrested for allegedly setting brush fires intentionally that have displaced thousands of people and destroyed wildlife in Australia in recent weeks.
"As inquiries continue, police are appealing to the community to provide footage and/or images from phones, dashcam, or other devices that show any of the fires in their infancy, even if only from a distance," police said in a statement.
The fires have killed 18 people and destroyed hundreds of millions of animals and livestock, thousands of homes, and more than 4.9 million hectares of land.
Those charged with arson could face harsh penalties, including manslaughter, which carries a penalty of 25 years in prison. Police in New South Wales have taken legal action against 183 people for fire-related offenses since early November, including "discarding a lighted cigarette or match on land." Three men were also charged with looting vacated properties.
"The community and the government has a right to be outraged. We are not living in South Central L.A. We don't live in Syria. We don't do this to each other. This is the south coast of New South Wales," NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services David Elliot said, calling anyone who loots the home of a family that has "potentially lost everything ... the lowest of the low."
A state of emergency was declared in the area last week. Climate change activists around the world and some politicians in the United States have pointed to the crisis as further evidence of the danger in not addressing the warming planet.
Man-caused Climate Change is real!
So I guess climate change is what made people set these fires?
I believe some of those arrested are young people who are just idiots.
But I hope they look into the others to see if there are political or religious motivations for such terrible deeds.
They should deport or imprison anyone hateful enough to start such fires. Stop importing even more unemployable troublemakers! Just like here in the states.
Now that right there is some pretty crappy reporting because as of two days ago the arsonist arrests were up to 183 going by the Australian papers.
Maybe they are only giving figures for one province.
This is why we need the borders secure, and for a lot of border security activists they have persistently pointed this out.
They’ve GOT to be home-grown eco-terrorist dumb-@sses.
Australia is one of the hardest countries to get into in the first place. They do a thorough body-cavity search on you, and demand that you have enough $ to support yourself if they even deign to let you in - you’re not getting ANY assistance from them. ;)
Really? I didn’t know that. Well, they have the entry requirements down good. We in the states can learn from them in that regard. The brief time I spent in Australia while in the Navy was a pleasant experience. Extraordinarily vast and hot, even in the morning. I was in Perth, February. temp about 77 degrees at 10AM.
[[The tragedy unfolding in Australia is climate change-based]]
Yeah, its the dry season, and when the climate changes again, it will be the wet season
The fires were not due to climate change they were due to arsonists lighting fires during the dry season- Weve always had dry seasons, all around the world- for as long as mankind has been around- and weve always had fires during these times- nothing has changed- it isnt any worse now than it was during past dry seasons- dry seasons are always risky- always
BBC is shocked the fires are not caused by Global Warming
End of the Australian Summer.
Australia is pretty easy to get to from the United States.
Very hard to get residency or a permanent visa, unless one is a Muslim "refugee", it appears.
The current regime has tightened that up a bit.
—I’m curious how many are named “Mohammad”-—
My parents and Mom’s parents went to Australia for a month when I was in High School. Mom’s Mother had a brother in the Navy who married an Aussie Lass, and then stayed in Australia, so I have a whole branch of the family that lives there. :)
Dad went back again a decade later. He was seriously considering moving there, and that’s when he looked into all that he’d need to do to become a citizen, PLUS giving up being an American; no dual citizenship, I guess.
He’s been to New Zealand twice now, too.
Climate change radicals set fires that will release on the order of 100s of thousands to millions upon millions of tons in greenhouse gases so they could blame it on global warming?
If they could prove that, game set match against these mentally ill environmental terrorists.
Any word about the arsonists?? Were they part of a conspiracy of some kind? Did they share an ideology, or nationality?
i’m wondering if many of them are setting back fires? To save their homes?
ISIS and al-Qaeda have calls for Jihadi arson fires since may of 2019, stressing to supporters that they can wreak havoc by intentionally sparking blazes as their method of jihad. They did so in Syria, Spain and Iraq.
