BREAKING: Iraq parliament votes to expel US military

BEIRUT (AP) — The latest on U.S.-Iran tensions (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

Iraq’s parliament has voted to expel the U.S. military from the country.

Lawmakers voted Sunday in favor of a resolution that calls for ending foreign military presence in the country. The resolution’s main aim is to get the U.S. to withdraw some 5,000 U.S. troops present in different parts of Iraq.

The vote comes two days after a U.S. airstrike killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani inside Iraq, dramatically increasing regional tensions.

The Iraqi resolution specifically calls for ending an agreement in which Washington sent troops to Iraq more than four years ago to help in the fight against the Islamic State group.

The resolution was backed by most Shiite members of parliament, who hold a majority of seats.

Many Sunni and Kurdish legislators did not show up for the session, apparently because they oppose abolishing the deal.

If we consider that this started on 9/11, then we are 19 yrs in this.

Eventually someone will share the unfortunate designation of becoming the first U.S. service member KIA who was born after 9/11.

All Foreign Military’s implies that it also means Iran’s ‘so-called’ military

As I said, I prefer to see how this plays out than to get involved in arguments with FRs armchair general brigade.

The article does not state that there are two blocs that were absent in today’s vote that was postponed. The kurds and one other. In today’s session only 170 members showed up. The reason for the postponement. All of the members that showed up were from Shia blocs. The protests in Iraq that started in Iraq in October were the result of corruption in the Government of Iraq but also the influence Iran was trying to impose on Iraq.

More to follow to be sure.

Yes, leave.

Take ALL of our stuff that we paid for. Leave nothing behind, even if it’s junk.

Destroy every building, facility, or bit of infrastructure we’ve ever built for ourselves or them. Turn it all to rubble.

If we’ve ever given them computer resources, infect them with a Stuxnet or similar virus.

Leave nothing that they can ever use.

You’re right. Besides, Iran basically rules Iraq.

Great point, DoodleDog! Yet another reason to leave and let the muslims turn on themselves.

“Iraqis straddling both sides (US AND Iran) is over. President Trump forced their hands.

Now Iraq declares she’s with our enemy. Thanks for the clarification”.

You’re right. Iraq belongs to Iran now. They’re just going through the motions.

Any ‘modern’ muslim must renounce islam else, they are not ‘modern’. It is this contradiction that forces people to say the US is not at war with islam when it is at war with islam.

Exactly. That was a set up from the start. Saddam was hoodwinked into invading Kuwait and it was down hill from there.

The Iraqi government was colluding with Iran, which resulted in an attack on the US embassy.

Pull out. Destroy every piece of infrastructure we built. Salt the fields

It wasn’t worth a single US life. And never was.

That really worked out well did it not?/s

Trump is a genius. He wanted out and now he can pull out our military and all of our tax support.
Not tired of winning.

That’s the way I think too. Yay—now we can get the heck out of Dodge.

I certainly am not supporting isolationism but I do support America first. If a middle east issue ‘spills over’ to involve US interests, then of course, we should intervene. However, that is not what we are doing or have historically done in the middle east. Instead, we have chosen regime change and nation building, to include Afghanistan and Somalia, which I know are not the middle east but are examples of US policy overall.

How enlightened. Sounds like the old Soviet model. So much for promoting democracy, right?
