BREAKING: Iraq parliament votes to expel US military

BEIRUT (AP) — The latest on U.S.-Iran tensions (all times local):

4:45 p.m.

Iraq’s parliament has voted to expel the U.S. military from the country.

Lawmakers voted Sunday in favor of a resolution that calls for ending foreign military presence in the country. The resolution’s main aim is to get the U.S. to withdraw some 5,000 U.S. troops present in different parts of Iraq.

The vote comes two days after a U.S. airstrike killed Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani inside Iraq, dramatically increasing regional tensions.

The Iraqi resolution specifically calls for ending an agreement in which Washington sent troops to Iraq more than four years ago to help in the fight against the Islamic State group.

The resolution was backed by most Shiite members of parliament, who hold a majority of seats.

Many Sunni and Kurdish legislators did not show up for the session, apparently because they oppose abolishing the deal.

You assume there are sane muslims.

I wouldn't advise that.

TAKE THE OIL, PUMP IT OUT OF THE GROUND AND HAVE A LINE
OF SUPERTANKERS IN THE GULF, AND FILL THEM UP TO CAPACITY
BRING ALL THE OIL TO SAUDIS TO REFINE, AND USE THE MONEY
FOR THE WIDOW AND ORPHANS OF MIDDLE EAST WARS, THEY REST
WE SELL AND PAY DOWN OUR NATIONAL DEBT.

GIVE THE KURDS ALL THE TANKS, AMMO THAT THEY NEED TO
REMAIN WHERE THEY ARE IN IRAQ.

BRING THE REST OF OUT GEAR HOME OR GIVE IT TO ISRAEL
IRANS NEXT TARGET.

They know we want to leave, right? Also, it would be a shame if we recognized Kurdistan as an independent state.

It is not a law until the Iraqi prime minister signs it I assume so it could be Shiite bluster but we should leave just the same.

“backed by most Shiite....”

Meaning those who back the Shite mullahs of Iran.
The Kurds and Sunnis boycott the vote.

Non-binding, “making noise” and nothing happens, just like here.

They are a slight majority in Iraq

Especially when the Kurds are not counted and they become a big majority

Iraqis straddling both sides (US AND Iran) is over. President Trump forced their hands.

Now Iraq declares she’s with our enemy. Thanks for the clarification.

If they don’t want us, why would we stay?

Exactly.

I was in France when DeGUll told the US to leave his country. We did leave. However; we took all of our equipment form the biggest items down to the last grain of salt. Also we destroyed every thing that we built. It was like a nuke attack. So do the same in Iraq. Take all equipment so that the Muslims wouldn't give it to Iran. Like what happened when Obama pulled troops out of Iraq. Let the Iraq rebuild all the areas that the US built. Pull back to new bases in the US. Tell Iraq to Pound Sand.

And we may be in Iraq at the request of Iraqi Kurds.

So what? Ask the Syrian Kurds how that went.

If the President has shown anything it's his belief that all alliances are transactional. As soon as they have outlived their usefulness to us then he has no problems terminating them. Under our long overdue policy of "America First" there can be no other way. So the first question I would ask is if the Kurds want us to stay then what's in it for us?

If you make us leave and we take our money... isn’t that quid pro quo? Hey Nancy... get busy... weaponize that impeachment process again.

WW1 and WW2 combined were from 1914 to 1945, 31 yrs. If we consider that this started on 9/11, then we are 19 yrs in this. We now have troops in theater that were born AFTER 9/11. A sobering thought.

If ISIS wins in the Middle East, everyone there will join up or die. And they will join up - that’s more or less the way Islam originally spread. 1% die. 99% join the winners.

Then why are we sending our people there to die if it's just postponing the inevitable? Better to leave now. If the Iraqi people don't want ISIS then let them fight them. If they're going to just join them anyway then they're not worth protecting.
