A NASA intern has discovered a new type of aurora in 3-year-old video footage of the Arctic sky.
With the help of NASA scientists and a satellite, Jennifer Briggs, a physics student at Pepperdine University, connected the unusual aurora to a sudden retreat in Earth's magnetic field. It's the first time scientists have seen an aurora caused solely by a compression of Earth's magnetic field.
Usually, auroras dance across the sky when a lot of high-energy particles from the sun, called solar wind, flood over Earth. But in this case, the sun didn't show any unusual or heightened activity.

Beautiful. But since it isn’t supposed to do that, it’s kinda creepy.
Yeah, you pretty much want the planet to do only what it usually does!
A little difference to spice things up is ok once in a while, depending on what it is.
When they’re talking about the magnetic field getting wonky, I’m not too keen on it. :-)
I’ve been called a Roaring Borealis
You gotta take it as it comes - an island sinks, a mountain start up and so on. The planet will do what it wants, I reckon.
She talks about her discovery here:

You say that as if the planet doesn’t listen to the wails and plaintive cries of mankind??
Which is why so many weak-minded fall for the farce of man-made climate change.
But what about snotty, elder-abusing, insolent 16 year old girls? Surely it must need their calll?
And what causes the Sudan’s rather common Zodiac aurora borealis?
This is a poorly written article and seems to be agenda driven. By that I mean, no one can know whether this aurora type is “new”, we can only know it hasn’t been observed or identified before.
The instruments required to observe, measure and diagnose this phenomenon have only existed for a relatively few years.
Calling it “new” suggests some change in the planet, but who knows how many unobserved instances of this have occurred?
One of my kids works at NASA. He does flight operations for magnetospheric satellites. A few months ago he was on some project with solar wind.
So he may have been controlling the satellite that made this discovery. Since the article doesnt tell which satellite, thats my story and Im sticking to it.
The article did say the data recording occurred three years ago.
Mother Earth taking a slurp of some tasty Auroras.
When ancient man got high and mighty with the Tower of Babel God took corrective measure.
Mayve he’ll do the same with the high and mighty climate folks by sending us an extended polar weather visit.
Send them a bill for editing services.
Oops. Missed that part. He wasnt on the mission then.
