This is a poorly written article and seems to be agenda driven. By that I mean, no one can know whether this aurora type is “new”, we can only know it hasn’t been observed or identified before.

The instruments required to observe, measure and diagnose this phenomenon have only existed for a relatively few years.

Calling it “new” suggests some change in the planet, but who knows how many unobserved instances of this have occurred?

One of my kids works at NASA. He does flight operations for magnetospheric satellites. A few months ago he was on some project with solar wind.

So he may have been controlling the satellite that made this discovery. Since the article doesn’t tell which satellite, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
