The common answer is that Jews are, or tend to be, smart. Aside from the perennial nature-or-nurture question of why so many Ashkenazi Jews have higher I.Q.s, there is the more difficult question of why that intelligence was so often matched by such bracing originality and high-minded purpose.

It is prone to question the premise and rethink the concept; to ask why (or why not?) as often as how; to see the absurd in the mundane and the sublime in the absurd. Don’t mistake high intelligence for good judgement.
One last point, there is a difference between inbreeding, that is offspring produced from within known family, and the close-breeding that often occurs in insular groups.

Tribal warfare is the special environmental pressure that drives most intelligence gains in humans while leaving all other animals largely untouched. To work right, evolution requires that some people live, but just as importantly some other people must die. The ugly side of high IQ is a whole lot of people had to be killed to get there.
Tribal warfare is caused by a very specific repeating sequence of human emotions: vanity, envy, hate, murder, voting Democrat. This has been going on since Eve, full of herself, envied that apple. Cain was arguably the world's very first Democrat.

But the ones you refer to in this country are no longer Jews in the true sense of the religion.
Most of them have never even seen the Torah, much less read the lessons contained therein.
They are much like the Catholics in this country that go to confession, do their penance, so they can sin like hell the rest of the week.

Ashkenazi Jews are Caucasian. We have many pale-skinned blonds, redheads, people with blue, green and gray eyes. Ashkenazi come mainly from Western and Central Europe.
The stereotype swarthy Jew descends either from the southern or Eastern areas of Russia and/or are really Sephardi Jews from Turkey, Iran or other Middle Eastern areas.
And, BTW, the Sephardi Jews, just like their Persian neighbors, are not only white, they are Aryans.
My red-haired, green-eyed father, a Litvak (Lithuanian Jew), was condescendingly called a ‘white Jew’ by his Christian American coworkers. Many Litvaks could pass for Irish and, within the older, immigrant Jewish culture, were commonly characterized in manner similar to the characterizations of the Irish by, say, the English.
Having experienced the Shabbos dinner table discussions while growing up, I can clarify why it produces excellent thinkers: one is expected to have all the facts before speaking and admonished if we are simply facile or worse, argue from error.

While there were some converts, you are referencing a common trope about the Khazars that is used to delegitimize the European Jewish settlers of Israel and, by extension, both Israel herself and Zionism.

It has long been my opinion that intelligence often comes down to hard work in learning and application of that knowledge.
From what I have seen, they work very hard. That work ethic which they apply to complex fields is why they so often shine.
