Radio shock jock Don Imus, one of the early pioneers of his genre, died Friday less than two years after retiring, according to a family statement given to NBC New York.
He was 79.
The controversial morning personalitys last day on the radio was on March 29 of last year. He had announced on Jan. 22 that he was retiring, telling fans: Turn out the lights...the party's over."

RIP....Don Imus!!! You changed the morning and evening TV & radio talk shows for the better in so many ways!!!
Not many years ago, a 100 y/o man who worked for the LA transit department performing/supervising the cleaning of city buses retired. In his many decades with the department, he had taken only 1/2 day off...to attend his wife's funeral. He died within a month of retirement.
Two of my (male) neighbors who lived adjacent to my house died not long after retirement, one within a year. Neither would be considered elderly by today's standards, 60ish.
Something psychological & physiological way too often occurs when men lose what they consider their life's primary purpose. Scares the hell out of me.
Yes I think he was
Watched for all the years I was in Maine. Just searched and saved Emmylou Harris on Imus. 911 broadcast from his NYC apartment. Imus Ranch one of my best charities
During the mid-80s, WNBC 660 AM had Imus in the morning window and Howard Stern in the afternoon window.
What an interesting character.

Journalism 101: You NEVER use a passive verb ANYWHERE in a news story, EVER, least of all in a headline.
Passive verbs avoid attribution and attribution goes to the “who” in “the 5 Ws” of news reporting.
My wife told me shed read in 1968 or so he did a black panther look a like contest on his first or second radio show
Man that was early early for that sort of thing
Newton or a Cleaver
That set the tone
I was not a fan but my wife was....no question imus made the genre not the other way around
He was a wisecracking rich kid born on third base who could afford risks which he took with abandon
He could be very funny
But mean too
Anyhow its done now
Lesbian dating game era
I heard about this on radio while driving a road-trip yesterday. Whatever station it was, they played a hilarious exchange between Imus and one of his co-workers on-air. They were arguing about something and Imus says, “You want me to go to my safe and get my gun?” The other guy answers, “Only if you put it to your temple...”
No kidding, he wasn’t out acting like Opie & Anthony. He was labeled a “shock-jock” by people who thought that everybody on-air should have a delivery like Stoned Phillips. My mother-in-law quit listening to him when he said something “racist” about women on Indian reservations but has no comment when asked why DemonRat politicians are never in trouble for saying that their minority constituents are too stupid to be expected to obtain and carry proper ID.
