Psychosis, addiction, ER visits: For young users, marijuana can be a dangerous game
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | December 23, 2019 | Rita Giordano

“A few years ago, it was rare to see a young person enter Caron with marijuana-induced psychosis,” said Garbely. “Now we see it on a regular basis. Older teens and young adults — approximately ages 18 to 26 — are the most impacted. We see a significant misperception about the safety and efficacy of marijuana among our teen and young-adult patient population.”

Every aspect of my life has been immensely improved since.

This can't be. I'm reading it makes you a psychotic mess. That you shouldn't be able to coherently carry on a conversation. That you must be hiding paranoid in a dark corner of the room typing on the keyboard with a crayon clenched between your teeth. Seriously, I don't smoke myself but know several that do and they are fine and have good jobs with fewer problems than most. maybe there are some people who smoke that have OTHER problems but that is the one they key in on. I don't have a dog in this fight but obviously some people have very strong opinions on it.

Yeah, to put it mildly, LSD can totally freak you out...for hours and hours.

You probably won’t die, unless you are one of the unfortunate ones who freak out too much. Sadly, some do end it all.

Sure, that’s what this country needs to stay strong and free—lots of people tripping on acid every day. Ha, that’s like a primer on “How To Lose a Nation While Enjoying the Vivid Colors.”

Yeah, that’s what I thought too. But this program indicated that this officer had been exposed to such a large amount of pure LSD that it was going to fry his nervous system. The officer indicated the same. I really can’t imagine what the effect of 1,000 hits at once might be.

Tisk, tisk. Tis but a harmless little weed. Just for fun and medicinal purposes. No harm can come of it.

The legalization of pot means the legal dealers must now compete with one another to deliver the highest high, so they’re growing stronger hybridized strains, then lacing the finished product with who-knows-what.

It’s likely you have logical conversations with pot heads every day.

Even on FR.

“xanax is much more effective at it because of it’s much shorter half life in the body”

Ativan is far worse.

From what I recall of how LSD works, it triggers a response in the brain. Meaning that once a certain level is reached any extra has no added effect. And that maximum level is pretty small in itself. 1,000 hits would have no more effect than the “normal” maximum dose.

The babies who bathed in high levels of thc in the womb should be hitting school in CO. In 30 years, have never seen such high levels and we only test a tiny percent of them.
However, i do have to wonder about the chicken and egg.. whatever drove them to smoke at addictive levels could be the real source of the problem.

Not really.

marijuana is a drug that effects the neurological system

Showers disrupt the neuro pathways one of the reasons people with arthritis feel less pain after a shower. The paths need to reformat, so to speak.

I lasted until around 1982. It might have been the stronger stuff, or it might just have been me, but I’d get very anxious and self-conscious whenever I’d smoke. It wasn’t fun any more, so that was that.

I might try it again after I retire and am no longer subject to random drug testing, or I might not.

Hmmm. I don’t know.

I know that once the brain “gets off” on the drug, the same effect cannot be achieved again for approximately 5 days, but I am not sure what happens if you consume a large dose at once.

There probably is a maximum effect. Perhaps the program wasn’t being fully honest about the situation and exaggerated for dramatic effect.

I am not aware of much research into the effects on the brains of older users, but am certainly interested in finding out more.

In this politically and socially charged area... I am not sure that funding will be made available for research into the effects of marijuana on older brains.

My wife is a retired nurse and I of course worked as a fire officer in a large city during my career. We both had a lot of opportunities to see first hand the results of many years of marijuana use on people we helped treat in addition to family and friends.

It is interesting how little the public including users actually know about long term negative effects that many health care professionals are aware of. One symptom of long term use that my wife and I both noted many times were severe varicose veins in people at an earlier age than one would normally expect to find them.

My wife's ex-husband was a heavy user at an early age and had horrible varicose veins starting in his early 20s. His doctor blamed the marijuana. I have two sister-in-laws who also have been heavy users who started suffering from varicose veins in their 20s. None of them have family histories that would suggest problems with vascular weakness. What they have in common is heavy marijuana use from an early age.

But much more serious than the unsightly appearance and discomfort of their varicose veins is the increased risk they indicate for developing deep vein thrombosis (blood clots cutting off circulation) and strokes. These are all conditions associated with vascular health and they are all conditions that have long been thought by doctors to be associated with habitual marijuana use.

When a person has a stroke in their 20s through 40s they are very likely to be found to be habitual marijuana users. By the time we reach our 50s and beyond the chances of a stroke from other causes increases but it does not mean that marijuana has not played a role as well. Marijuana has been shown in studies to cause changes in the circulation in people and animals brains irregardless of their age. But one of my chief concerns would be indications that habitual use is associated with poor vascular health that affects the brain and other vital organs.

I’d suggest high THC levels elevate the psychosis or other condition. Just what I observed but it’s hard to find studies. Just read the article, not the studies Berenson provided.
