Psychosis, addiction, ER visits: For young users, marijuana can be a dangerous game
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | December 23, 2019 | Rita Giordano

“A few years ago, it was rare to see a young person enter Caron with marijuana-induced psychosis,” said Garbely. “Now we see it on a regular basis. Older teens and young adults — approximately ages 18 to 26 — are the most impacted. We see a significant misperception about the safety and efficacy of marijuana among our teen and young-adult patient population.”

No kidding. If they can’t handle a difference of opinion, they clearly can’t deal with anything.

I been around long enough to have seen more than my share of druggie burnouts, certainly enough to recast Reefer Madness many times over - as a documentary.

“Hospital sends her home with Xanax to cure her weed addiction.”

Yup. Six of one, half dozen of the other. If it’s heavily monitored in a deescalated dosage down-to-nothing framework it might have some value. But you could do the same weaning-off with the original drug, pot.

One cannot have a logical conversation with a pothead.

I grew up in a place where marijuana use was wide spread and accepted. The police basically ignored it for my entire life. I have tons of friends and relatives who have been long time users. Since it was legalized in this state usage has gone way up and the problems users have caused for people like myself who worked in public safety and emergency medical treatment have increased greatly.

But it is not just young people that have difficulties caused by marijuana. The older people that I know who have been longtime users typically have predictable and sometimes severe issues that cause them great difficulties. Marijuana is a scourge on society largely because the issues that it causes are glossed over by propponents.

But aren’t these pretty much the same problems that go along with chronic alcohol abuse?

Plenty of people drink alcohol and it doesn’t ruin their lives.
But some folks can’t handle it at all and it messes them up.

Why should cannabis be any different?
Lots of folks strongly insist that it’s harmless. And maybe it is for most people.
But some people seem to react badly to it.

“Reefer Madness” is treated like a joke, but it probably pays to educate people that if you’re smoking this stuff and things are getting weird, or your life is going downhill, then maybe — just maybe — you’re one of the people who shouldn’t use the stuff.

But I’m afraid the current culture treats such caution as some sort of prim, puritanical ignorance.

Can’t be. FR’s own lunatic libertarians (open borders; freedom to be a fag; legalized prostitution; vending machine narcotics; open borders; freedom to murder the unborn) assure us it’s a harmless drug.

No, alcohol abuse causes serious but very different issues.

Please do. The 1935 version is kinda outdated.

It also seems to me, that it may depend on the type of Pot, not all Pot is the same. Or, so I’m told.

There are some people who casually partake once or twice a year.

Then you have those who just have to “wake and bake” every single day.

I am actually aware of benzodiazepines being used to treat massive LSD overdoses, and I mean on the guaranteed fatal level as happened to a police officer on a drug raid once, where he was exposed to the equivalent of 1,000 hits of LSD at once. This would have killed him, the valium here saved his life by adjusting his CNS in the opposite manner of the LSD.

Here, even though THC is considered to be a mild hallucinogen, treating any adverse effect with Xanax seems preposterous, because Xanax is a highly physically addictive substance.

The pot that we have available these days is far more potent than what was available a couple decades ago.

Long ago and far away it was 1967, I was 16, and you could get a bag of Mexican ditch weed for $15 an “ounce”. Smoke two joints and it’d feel like you had a couple of beers and it was FUN. Fast forward 10 years to age 26 and it had been hybridized and amplified to “Maui Wowie” and other “brands” for about $150 an “ounce”. Two puffs and you were catatonic for 3 hours. NO FUN. I quit. That’s the stuff that people are smoking these days. No wonder they’re getting psychosis!

But its OK now because its legal some places and the government can tax the hell out of it.
