$15 minimum wage amendment makes 2020 Florida ballot
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | December 19, 2019 | Steven Lemongello

Floridians will vote next year on whether to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026, an amendment initiative led by Orlando attorney John Morgan that’s already drawing opposition from Republican leaders and the business community.

The initiative that will be called Amendment 2 made the November ballot after its wording was approved by the Florida Supreme Court in a decision released Thursday.

Court review was the last obstacle to getting the measure on the ballot after Morgan’s Florida For A Fair Wage collected more than 770,000 of the required 766,200 signatures.

The amendment would raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour beginning Sept. 30, 2021, and increase it an additional dollar each year until it reached $15 in 2026. After that, future increases would be adjusted annually for inflation.

The current minimum wage of $8.46 is scheduled to increase to $8.56 on Jan. 1.

The proposal already has drawn the ire of business groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Florida Retail Federation.

“This ballot measure will actually hurt the very people its proponent claims it will help," said Edie Ousley, vice president of public affairs for the Florida Chamber, in an email to News Service of Florida Thursday. "This is the poster child for a proposed constitutional amendment masquerading as a turnout weapon to impact the presidential election.”

Republicans have also criticized the proposal, with state House Speaker Jose Oliva saying in an email, “There’s nothing compassionate about mandating someone’s job out of existence and robbing them of the dignity of work. ... This arbitrarily chosen dollar figure, while applauded on the cocktail circuit, will cost working families their jobs and that is something I cannot support”

There’s not enough of them to worry about their vote, so they don’t matter?

Worry? Right now they are being pandered to and that has to stop. It is so over the top.

Politicians who produce nothing but hot air and use our money as giveaway s love to come up with these schemes.

Someone needs to ask and how will this be paid for as profits are needed to pay any wages and you just increased costs significantly decreasing profits

Oh I see we are trillions in debt and you still have a job when in effect you are bankrupt using our money

Moved to Florida almost 20 years ago. I can confirm this. Morgan and Morgan own central Florida, and the sooner John Morgan ceases to expel CO2, the better.

I’m not talking about “citizens” - we were talking about VOTERS.

That’s part of why some industries are natural for consolidation.

Home healthcare, for example, might become products sold or leased to consumers and funded by Medicare.

Minimum wage: No job worth less is allowed to be performed.

That’s my hope at least! I don’t want some poor minimum-wage schlub eventually to have to come in to wipe my butt.

And you really think small businesses are the only ones who care about minimum wage?

There is a market for unskilled labor and small businesses are only part of that market. Most of the unskilled laborers I know make more than minimum wage. Most of the time it is entry level that is paid minimum wage. Unless it is professional internship — the may not be paid at all.

Kiosks are far greater than cashiers.

A kiosk is anonymous so nobody can poison or spit on your food because they do not know who you are.

The Republican Party needs to grow up and get off the hate the worker mentality.

Minimum wage is worker hate.

If someone wants to perform the same work for $13 per hour. to stay employed, your $15 min wage will force him unemployed, on govt welfare or homeless or even suicidal because you stole his dignity. That is hate.

Minimum wage is Democrat Socialism.

Minimum wage is pure hate.

Minimum wage hurts innocent children.

Another moronic proposal by John Moron of Moron & Moron, for the money...(John Morgan of Morgan & Morgan is a big liberal trial lawyer. His big case is to sue Roundup for cancer.) In Florida, if there’s a liberal cause, most likely the Moron family is behind it.

What’s needed is a book or scholarly paper that reviews the horrid state laws and constitutional amendments passed via referenda at the polling place.

The people exercising direct democracy are not deliberative. Most, I suspect, give the matter as much thought as answering a telephone poll.

If the people are going to vote directly for laws, it should be done days apart from voting for representatives, senators and presidents.

My homestate of FL is a textbook example of why democracy is so dangerous.

“Wow. I had no idea this was going on in Florida. So that’s how the ‘voting rights for felons’ thing passed there.”

You would be amazed at the laws we have here now and I really believe most people don’t even know what they are voting on. They just put yes straight down the amendment section. There are a lot of amendments on our ballots each voting cycle.

The only way to kill it now is to turnout the Republican vote next November!

Like we should have done for ALL the Morgan and Morgan promoted initiatives!

Morgan and Morgan are a Clear and Present Danger to Florida!

Don't forget all those ILLEGAL ALIENS working for local politicians as babysitters, cooks, maids, chauffeurs, and gardeners.

But it's really about UNIONS trying to increase their own pay per hour by their contracts that's attached to a certain amount above minimum wage.

$15 an hour actually costs the Employer $18 an hour thanks to Employment Taxes. So much for productivity based compensation.
