$15 minimum wage amendment makes 2020 Florida ballot
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | December 19, 2019 | Steven Lemongello

Floridians will vote next year on whether to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026, an amendment initiative led by Orlando attorney John Morgan that’s already drawing opposition from Republican leaders and the business community.

The initiative that will be called Amendment 2 made the November ballot after its wording was approved by the Florida Supreme Court in a decision released Thursday.

Court review was the last obstacle to getting the measure on the ballot after Morgan’s Florida For A Fair Wage collected more than 770,000 of the required 766,200 signatures.

The amendment would raise the minimum wage to $10 per hour beginning Sept. 30, 2021, and increase it an additional dollar each year until it reached $15 in 2026. After that, future increases would be adjusted annually for inflation.

The current minimum wage of $8.46 is scheduled to increase to $8.56 on Jan. 1.

The proposal already has drawn the ire of business groups such as the Florida Chamber of Commerce and Florida Retail Federation.

“This ballot measure will actually hurt the very people its proponent claims it will help," said Edie Ousley, vice president of public affairs for the Florida Chamber, in an email to News Service of Florida Thursday. "This is the poster child for a proposed constitutional amendment masquerading as a turnout weapon to impact the presidential election.”

Republicans have also criticized the proposal, with state House Speaker Jose Oliva saying in an email, “There’s nothing compassionate about mandating someone’s job out of existence and robbing them of the dignity of work. ... This arbitrarily chosen dollar figure, while applauded on the cocktail circuit, will cost working families their jobs and that is something I cannot support”

Socialism in a nutshell. This hasn’t worked. Anywhere. There is plenty of data that $15 wage makes jobs disappear and leaves low-skill workers unemployed. But I guess they think “we didn’t have the right people in charge last time” or else “we’ll do it better next time” or something.

Min Wage started at $.25 in 1938. Adjusted for inflation that would be $4.56 today.

This is a socialist agenda plot to crash the market! $15 bucks sounds awesome to your minimum layman worker...of course it would win at the ballot box if put up for a vote! Easy pickings!!

Must be an ivory-tower thing. They’re so high up, they can’t tell how low some people earnestly & honestly are.

Of late there was a story noting that, after decades of really truly trying to find jobs for _everyone_, our military has concluded (paraphrased) that anyone with an IQ under 83 is, really & truly, incapable (there just is no productive/useful work they can be relied on for). [This isn’t being insulting, it’s a reality check.]

Between that and $MinWage, there are people who _can_ do something useful, but - really & truly - are incapable of producing $MinWage work. These people are being unfairly (albeit perhaps unwittingly) targeted by ivory-tower Progressives for removal from the workforce. Being forbidden from earning anything, they must live off the State - assuming they’re competent to navigate that bureaucracy.

In other words, after 2026 it will rise exponentially as a self-inflicted rise of the cost of living necessary to pay the artificially high wages.

Just go ahead and let voters vote for a wage of $100,000 per year. Guaranteed to pass.

Heck, why not just go for a million dollars a year. Guaranteed winner.

See your bid and raise it. Next...

Neal Boortz always said, when the taker class constitute 51% of the vote and realize they can vote to give themselves a raise, it’s all over. Campaigning politicians offering to give the most money are sure to win elections till the country is finally in ruins.

Way to go John. Maybe this is how we get there. What can go wrong?

Morgan and Morgan as I recall were the jerks who made a mint scaring the snot out of old people over every little void in the bedrock as if it was an imminent peril, a giant sinkhole, so they could litigate it , causing their clients’ neighbors to be unable to get insurance and screwing up their mortgages/loans.

They’re also pushing some gun B.S. ....anything to get the liberal dregs of society out to vote.

They don’t care whether it passes or not, M&M just wants to get the Democrat base motivated enough to come to the polls, and promises of pay raises, real or empty will do that. As will animal rights issues... they don’t care about the long term problems they create, all they want is turnout.

McDonald’s will just continue to automate. They are already installing kiosks where you can order on your own without encountering an employee.
