WASHINGTON, Nov 26 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview aired on Tuesday that he will designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorists over their role in drug and human trafficking.
"They will be designated ... I have been working on that for the last 90 days. You know, designation is not that easy, you have to go through a process, and we are well into that process," Trump said in an interview with conservative media personality Bill O'Reilly that aired on Tuesday.
Once a group is designated as a terrorist organization, under U.S. law it is illegal for people in the United States to knowingly offer support and its members cannot enter the country and may be deported. Financial institutions that become aware they have funds connected to the group must block the money and alert the U.S. Treasury Department.
Mexico's government did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Mexico's foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard, said on Monday he did not expect the United States to make such a move.
Earlier this month, Trump, in a tweet, offered to help Mexico "wage WAR on the drug cartels and wipe them off the face of the earth."
The proposal came after nine Americans were killed in an ambush in northern Mexico.
Mexican authorities said they may have been victims of mistaken identity amid confrontations among drug gangs in the area.

By the way. I really think if Sharp Shooters killed the Cartel bringing the illegals over the border there might be a slight decrease in illegals coming over the borders.
Anyone with a face covered, OR holding a weapon (ANY thing) should be able to be shot by our Sharp Shooters.
Isn’t the left “knowingly offering support” by fighting for open borders? Denying the wall keeps the drugs flowing in....if that isn’t support, I don’t know what is. Start the arrests from the top down.

What deal was cut to prevent action resulting from declaring cartels as terrorists? Although I do not know, It would seem that the President of the USA and the President of Mexico agreed to some secret action to get rid of Cartels

By declaring them ‘terrorists and terrorist organizations’ a whole new set of laws and treaty requirements come into play...................
And why tell what h is going to do instead of just doing it? Lmost like he s looking for excuse to not do it or give someone chance to undermine and kill it. Repeated approach by Trump.

IMHO, it’s essentially declaring war on Mexico. There will be casualties.

Mexican cartels are the Mexican government. That’s why the figureheads of the Mexican government are so upset about this.
It’s an open secret the cartels own Mexico and run it in every way that counts.
This essentially declares war on a long-standing enemy who have been killing American citizens as well as their own for decades. The difference between ISIS and Mexican cartels is minimal when the ideology is removed. ISIS hides behind Islam. The cartels no longer bother hiding. They have entrenched themselves throughout America as well as taken over Mexico.
This needed to happen for our sake and for the sake of good people in Mexico. It will be a long and bloody war but the alternative is to give in to this criminal and brutal enterprise.
I expect the cartel’s friends in the democrat party, which is nearly every dem pol and a lot of dem voters, will have fire coming out of their eyes over this.
This is a narrative the dems cannot deny after supporting open borders and illegal immigration for decades. They own this problem. It’s up to the American people/republicans and military to fix it.
This may be the single most significant thing to happen to those born after WWII. It will surely affect us all when the cartels attack us here in the open as they are sure to do. Keep your powder dry and head on a swivel folks. It’s about to get real. It may even be the wake up call the millennials have been needing, well, those who claim to be “woke” anyway.

Please see post #17. I agree; the cartels basically run and own Mexico in every way that counts. All built on drug, smuggling, hostage, and terrorist intimidation money. Take away their ability to move drugs into America (not easy) and smuggle humans (somewhat easier if the political will is there) and it cripples the cartels. In time their vast resources of money will dwindle making them less potent. When their street soldiers don't get paid and can't live the high life they've become accustomed to; they will desert the cartels. The key is to take away their income.
The world has Radical Islamic Terrorists; we have the cartels to contend with.
