Michael Bloomberg launches 2020 presidential bid

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg officially entered the 2020 race Sunday, ending several weeks of will-he-or-won’t-he speculation about a late entry into the already-crowded Democratic primary.

Bloomberg’s entry was preceded by news of a massive television ad buy — $31 million, according to Advertising Analytics, who told NBC News it was the single largest single week expenditure they’d ever tracked. A $30 million buy in the final weeks of the 2012 race for then-President Barack Obama held the previous record.

The ad promotes Bloomberg's record as mayor and then promises "to rebuild the country and restore faith in the dream that defines us: where the wealthy will pay more in taxes and the middle class get their fair share; everyone without health insurance can get it and everyone who likes theirs, keep it; where jobs won't just help you get by but get ahead. And on all those things, Mike Bloomberg intends to make good."

Should be fun. I’m sure that Nanny Bloomberg will do just super in “gun country” as camo-wearing fake moderate democrats like to call it. He and Steyer are sucking all the wind out of the room, as they have private money, vs the chump change the DNC has in the bank. Can’t wait to see the ads during football games. Get the popcorn. Bloomberg spent $250m to get three mayoral terms in NYC, 10x his opponents. Based on presidential runs costing roughly $400m to $700m, Bloomberg might spend up to $7b in his White House bid. His $50b personal fortune gives him a lot of ammo. Since he made his fortune collating financial data and selling it to Wall Street, crushing the incumbent and much more established Reuters and Thomson in the process, it is likely that he will have a data operation that gives both his primary and general election (if he makes it that far) opponents a run for their money.

After seeing the 60 Minutes puff piece on Jamie Dimon 2 or so weeks ago, I can see them trotting him out at the DNC Convention to go mano-e-mano businessman to businessman against President Trump.

Bloomberg was probably the most fiscally-prudent NYC mayor in the past century, although that’s not necessarily saying much. He smacked the public employee unions around, with particular focus on the teachers and hospital employee unions. The question isn’t so much his general election appeal where, as a moderate, he’ll appeal to libertarians and libertines alike, in the middle portion of the electorate where elections are won. It’s whether someone as moderate as he is can win the Democratic primary. There is a reason that, in his three terms as mayor, he never tried out for the Democratic nomination.

But, in order to win as a Dem, he’s got to scoop up the giveaway crazies, and that requires a lot of spending promises.

I think you’re right... no chance to be the Dem candidate. Maybe if he had started out on stage earlier, he might have had a chance, but how was he to know how the clown-car that is the current group would shape up through the first five debates? It’s going to be tough to build momentum for any new entrant. Look at the Obama-endorsed Deval’s first rally, where three ... count ‘em.... three people showed up.

in theory he should take votes away from Biden....so there will be Warren, Sanders, Biden, Mayor Pete and maybe Bloomberg all getting at least 10 percent of the delegates

but no one person more then 25% .......brokered convention likely( even without bloomberg)... but then Bloomberg may get the nod
