Trump lunches with two of his biggest Senate GOP critics
The Hill ^ | November 21, 2019 | Alexander Bolton

President Trump invited two of his biggest Senate Republican critics, Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), to the White House Thursday for an unspecified discussion.

The invitation comes as impeachment hearings in the House continue. The House is widely expected to impeach Trump, which would create a trial in the Senate where Romney and Collins would be two of the most scrutinized GOP votes.

Romney said before the meeting that he planned to talk about his own bill, the Trust Act, and the president’s plan for regulating vaping products.

“If I’m asked for questions I want to talk to him about my Trust Act and get his perspectives on that. Vaping as well, I’d like to talk to him about his vaping plans,” Romney said.

The other Senate attendees at Thursday’s lunch were Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Thursday’s event was the latest in a series of lunches that Trump has held with Republican senators.

Last week he previewed for a small group of senators the transcript from his April 21 phone call congratulating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his election.

Some Republican senators have used these meetings as a chance to give the president advice, such as Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who in a recent lunch session urged the president to not let himself become too personally consumed by impeachment and let his Republican allies on Capitol Hill take up more of the burden of defense.

Grassley on Thursday said he had no agenda for the meeting.

“I’m going to see how the meeting goes. If they have an agenda, we’ll have to stick to their agenda,” he said.

Baloney. In a divided Congress McConnell has almost NO power to get any legislation passed.

Wonder who Romney is going to leak the meeting to first.

“They’re bringing Nancy Deal , you stop Barr and we’ll stop impeachment.”

Then Trump should tell them to pound sand, because two GOP senators voting for conviction does squat.

Her vote was far too calculated to be courageous on Kavanaugh. She had her sensitive political wind finger up and was one of the last to disclose her vote. She had to see whichi way popular opinion was about to swing.

Did Mittens give the president the ultimatum that it was time to step down?

Mittens is a puff adder, not at all to be trusted.

In hindsight you kind of get the feeling that 2012 was all about sticking with the devil you know.

It’s a good question in my view.

FWIW I think he prefers smaller groups so he can pay particular attention to a very few.

It doesn’t hurt to have supporters in a group when trying to get closer to some who are less supportive.

This is McConnell’s game plan. Have Trump over the barrel on impeachment so he can ram through more stinking piles of garbage bills. BOHICA.

If they try that on Trump he should immediately make it public.

“In hindsight you kind of get the feeling that 2012 was all about sticking with the devil you know.”

So true. Had I to do it over again I would have voted for my dog as a write-in instead of Mittens. I’m in Illinois, so my vote for Romney in 2012 was meaningless, anyway, electoral college-wise.

——That’s why they are at the table.——

I can’t really argue with that premise except that the President likes to listen.

Rather than beat on the two with whips an clubs, listening and then appealing to their natural vanity and then saying a few kind words in a tweet might thaw their coldness.

That is sugar attracts more flies than vinegar.

Ask Xi and Kim

PDJT is sensing where this impeachment might be going in the Senate, especially if the vote is anonymous, as there are rumblings of this.

The R senators, by and large, hate Trump, many undercover never Trumpers.

It’s a shame that it comes to this.

If the Senate convicts Trump, I foresee blood flowing.
