The pneumonic plague is almost always fatal, and spreads quickly, as it did with the Black Death outbreak in the 14th century
Two people in China were diagnosed with the pneumonic plague, sparking fears of an outbreak of the highly contagious and deadly disease among Chinese citizens.
Government officials said that the two cases came from Inner Mongolia, and they are now being treated in a hospital in the Chaoyang District in Beijing, CNN reported.
Amid concerns that the two cases could spur the spread of the plague, as it did in the 14th century with the Black Death, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday that there is an extremely low risk of that happening again.
The Chinese CDC said in a statement that they moved the two patients into quarantine and medicated anyone they could have infected, while launching an investigation to find others who may have been exposed to the plague, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The pneumonic plague is the deadlier of the three types, which also include the bubonic and septicemic plagues. Bubonic is the most common, and there are typically around a dozen cases in the U.S. each year. But the pneumonic plague is almost always fatal if not treated, the U.S. CDC says...

It’s always there, in the background, just waiting for a vector.................
“I thought we got rid of this crap ... “
Not even. And you can be sure that different governments have weaponized it.
Ground Zero for bubonic plague in the US is the East Mountains of NM. Somebody gets it every couple of years.
Can the disease be transmitted by mail?
Not even. And you can be sure that different governments have weaponized it.

Need to stamp out fleas.
Eastern NM isn’t as densely populated as China. This could be an issue.
What’s the vector, Victor?
Peach
It’s endemic in most rodent and bat populations of the American west. Couple of cases every year in Oregon. It’s never going away.
Can we say Black Plague?
Good point.
With the shortage of pigs in China, ordinary people are turning to rabbits, dog meat and rat steaks as alternatives to pork. The fleas on rats are the vector of Pasteurella pestis, the organism that causes plague. Suspect its difficult to remove all the fur and the fleas may be contaminating the meat.
I’ve been wondering if a black swan event like that would turn the left coast red. Silver lining.
In Mongolia the marmot is considered a delicacy even though it carries the plague virus.
Dollars to doughnuts the plague came from marmot meat.
If a country with the population of China has only two cases of plague I would say they are doing much better than us. -Tom
Plague is endemic in Mongolia - an annual event, like flu season here (at a lower level).
