At least 10 people in Oklahoma were hospitalized Wednesday night after apparently getting insulin injections instead of flu shots, CBS affiliate KOTV reports. Health professionals were administering what they thought were flu shots at Jacquelyn House, a facility for people with disabilities, according to Bartlesville Police and Fire Department.

My only flu shot was also forced on me by the Navy. They lined us up and gave us the Swine flu shots regular Americans were afraid to take.

Who were the Medical Assistants? They often help set things up for the Doctor or the Nurse Practitioner.
Heads should be rolling, but they probably won’t.

Names like “Math & Science Academy of Excellence” are a dead giveaway.

Depends upon how many units were administered, and what the victims’ BSLs were at the time.
Insulin lowers BSL (blood sugar level); therefore they’d probably have a hypoglycemic event. It’s bad; I’ve been thru 5 since May 1st, when I was first diagnosed.
I take 4-8 units of Novolog (quick acting, short lasting) at breakfast/lunch/dinner on a sliding BSL scale after blood test, and 8 units of Lantus (slow acting, long lasting) at bedtime, also on a sliding BSL scale.
Sucks to be me.

Med techs have no license to be able to give shots

Beyond their scope of practice. If that’s what happened someone’s head should roll

Exactly!

She was probably skipping the day when they covered “Always read the vial” part.

Here in Michigan if they’re trained or “In-Serviced” on giving a flu vaccine they work under either the Doc’s license or whoever trained them, RN, LPN, P.A.

Still like you said, someone is in trouble.

I’ll try to remember this incident and not get annoyed when the third person asks me my name, DOB, and what procedure I am in for today.

You have to watch out for your own self - but who the heck reads the writing on the shot they are giving you?

My daughter, now 21, was 9 when diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She’s on Humalog and Lantus.

As a loving father, I can understand, if not really walk in your shoes.

At least the girl will never have tattoos, unlike a lot of her friends. She gets poked with needles enough.

I get it if they are licensed phlebotomists

Apparently state laws vary greatly

Just giving a shot (ie the mechanics of it) is no big deal. The big deal is the proper procedure....which would have meant checking the vial and checking the order and checking again.

Somebody handed out vials and said give em.... just stupid

I was diagnosed w/ Type 1, at 69, back in May after a 2yr battle w/ severe-acute Pancreatitis, which went sideways.

God Bless your Daughter and You.

You have FRMail.

shots are given by anyone who has been certified. Look at the pharmacies techs and the med assistants who are giving shots in pharmaicies and dr offices.

WTH?!

Something similar just happened a few weeks ago at a local school in Indianapolis where kids were supposed to be getting tuberculosis tests but instead got injected with insulin and the school nurse tried to cover it up.

Seems like an odd coincidence.

Didn’t that happen in a Wonderful Life too?
Rat poison instead of insulin.
Bailey was never born so he didn’t stop the pharmacist.
