Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., faced criticism Wednesday after voting "present" on a House resolution to formally recognize the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as a genocide.
The measure, H.Res.296, passed the chamber by an overwhelming 405-to-11 margin, representing a forceful rebuke to Turkey following the NATO ally's recent incursion against the Kurds along the Turkish-Syrian border.
Two other House members also voted "present" with Omar: fellow Democrat Eddie Bernice Johnson of Texas, and one Republican, Paul Gosar of Arizona.
But it was Omar's vote that drew the dismay of Armenian advocacy groups and political organizations.
Omar's "votes and actions ... do not represent the best of American or Muslim values," said Van Krikorian, the co-chair of the Armenian Assembly of America. "Innocent people were and are being slaughtered, and there is a universal need to defend the victims of genocide and ethnic cleansing, not to stand with or defer to the murderers."

A little digging reveals the resolution had little to do with an extermination that happened in 1915 - 1923 and everything to do with yet another attempt to “get Trump”. And as usual, these attempts by the DNC/MSM blow up in their face. Or in this case, it blew up in Omar’s face. The Trump Curse strikes again.
Here is part of the statement by Paul Gosar (AZ-04) who also voted “present” along with 11 Republicans who voted “no”.
“I voted present on Adam Schiff’s poorly worded, inflammatory and false Armenian Genocide Resolution, H.Res. 296. Make no mistake—the Democrats do not care about the Armenian Christians from 1915. In fact, most Democrats today don’t care about U.S. Christians, much less Armenian Christians from a century ago. This resolution is a pretext to attack Donald Trump.
Contrary to the Dear Colleague statement that accompanies this resolution, there is no credible evidence that Turkey has engaged in a genocide, or war crimes, or atrocities, against the Kurds in 2019. There was a completely fabricated story and video by ABC news of a “slaughter” of Kurds by Turkey, but ABC News was caught in its false flag propaganda efforts. Make no mistake—ABC News got caught, but there is likely other misinformation that the mainstream media is passing off that is just as false. There is plenty of evidence that the Turks have, for decades, suffered thousands of dead at the hands of Kurdish communist terrorists, under the umbrella of the Kurdish Workers Party, the PKK, and its new name, the SDF. As I have explained previously, the PKK/SDF is not our ally. They were fighting a common enemy (ISIS) with us, but they are not allied with our values, our system of capitalism, and our tolerance and our foreign policy objectives in the region.
If we want to acknowledge the conflict with the Ottoman Empire, an entity that has not existed for a century, and Armenian Christians that were removed in a brutal campaign, then let’s have that discussion.”
Give Omar a break in this case. She misunderstood what they were voting on and thought it was a vote to formally recognize the mass killing of Jews by the Nazis during WW2.
Ilhan, honey, it’s ok to condemn genocides, even when committed by people of the same ‘religion’.
First, the Young Turks persecuted the Kurds at the same time they were herding up Armenian Christians for the slaughter in the wake of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the conclusion of World War I. I thought progressives thought the Kurds were BFFs. (Maybe not so ironic is the fact that the most popular YouTube channel devoted to progressive politics is named The Young Turks.)
Second, Omar's refusal to acknowledge the Armenian Genocide is a hate crime in several European countries. I thought progressives were all for the legal prohibition of hate speech.
To answer your question about the list of Muslim values: yes, there is such a list. The Five Pillars of Islam are:
1) Shahadah - "There is no god but Allah and Mohammad is His Prophet." The value here is that the Muslim must to submit to Allah in all ways as they are described by Mohammad PBOH and interpreted by the correct religious authorities. (This is a very serious Muslim value: the penalty for renunciation is death.)
2) Salat - Prayer five times a day from sunrise to after sunset. The value here is that the Muslim must organize his entire life around the prayer schedule.
3) Zakat - This is a tax that is ostensibly to pay for the needy. (It's a wealth tax so Elizabeth Warren would approve.) However, jihad doesn't always pay for itself, and it leaves behind disabled veterans and dependents. The Ridda Wars just after Mohammad PBOH died were fought over who should get the zakat and what it should be used for. Abu Bakr won the war and thus established the value of might makes right. Following his victory, Abu Bakr use his funding to conquer Syria (in the Christian Byzantine Empire) and Persia (in the Zoroastrian Sassanid Empire.)
4) Sawm - Fasting during Ramadan is an extra special annual reminder that the Muslim must organize his entire year around the dictates of Islam. Special exemptions make jihad attractive during Ramadan.
5) Hajj - Pilgrimage to Mecca to remind every Muslim from whom and where to obtain the proper interpretation of Islamic values. Since everybody was poor and transportation was slow, Hajj was a once-in-a-lifetime sort of thing. The value here is that Muslim must organize his entire life around Islam. Great for the tourism business in Mecca and Medina and the pilgrimage routes through Arabia. Hajj was also a boon to western Arabia agriculture since the ritual sacrifices during Hajj created a new demand for sheep in the Mecca market.
A young Muslim might look at the prospects of a lifetime of getting up before sunrise every day and organizing the rest of every day around prayer times, fasting for Ramadan for a month every year, a wealth tax, and a mandated lifetime savings plan for a once-in-a-lifetime vacation that involves a long, dreary trip to a big black block in the middle of a godforsaken desert, and conclude that the license and promised rewards of signing up for jihad look pretty good.
She violated her ‘solid with Islam’ line by NOT voting “Nay” instead of wimping out and merely voting “Present.”
