That fire was caused when a dry branch from a eucalyptus tree was flung 30 feet (9 meters) by high winds into a city Department of Water and Power line, which short-circuited and sparked, the utility and Fire Department announced Tuesday.
The power line had been operating safely and the DWP had cut away brush and trees from around the line, officials said.
Mayor Eric Garcetti called it an act of God.

Double casings on electric lines?
Gas not electric?
Elect a bunch of Democrats, burn to death in the dark.
Water, and energy shortages maybe because millions of illegals are using them.
The problem is that these ignorant, turds on the left leave their socialist , pro illegal dump and then move to red states , but keep voting the way they did back in CA, NY, NJ, MA
Elections have consequences.
Get the homeless a job, and pay them to cut down the brush where needed.
Get the homeless a job, and pay them to cut down the brush where needed.
Ya have to keep the lines and the land clear of things that burn.
It’s incredibly complex, almost impossible to understand.
You reap what you sow.
If'you're young, you have no info on this system. Both my father and his brother went to Montana for a year.
Dad would be 102 today...passed at 78.
so the state, for decades has denied pge’s ability to maintain and upgrade their distribution facilities. so now those facilities cannot cope with demand, and overheat causing fires, the state blames pge, takes huge amounts of resources from them - resources that could have gone to fixing the problem, leaving pge the only recourse of shutting down the distribution facilities, denying power to millions of consumers. and yet the state continues to blame pge. am I getting this right?
I’m aware...
Elections have consequences.
Electrons have consequences.
Remember Soylent (not Soy) Green 1973 when they had to pedel a generator to keep the refrigerator running?
Good side effect : Keep CA’ers is good physical shape.
Calizuela or Venefornia?
Cancel bullet train and taking care of illegals and bury the dam things
can’t power lines go underground? i thought they could.
I hope every Californian gets the maximum misery and turmoil and pain, that they all so eagerly, blindly voted for. I could less about and for any of them fools, buffoons and idiots. You are getting just what you voted for....and I can assure you all, if you continue with your chosen Democrat Party scum & vermin leadership you will suffer even more.
Yes...young Virginia...there really is a “Santa Claus”...but, sadly there are no more “California Girls” to admire, only needles, drugs, feces, drunks, druggies and homeless souls on the California sidewalks, fires in the hills and valleys and, no electrical power, or cell phone transmission....thanks to your Democrat Party, low life!!! You truly got just what and who you voted for!!! No...I do not feel your pain...not one iota...sorry!!! Case Closed!!!
All facetiousness aside, one real solution for this is actually pretty simple. All they have to do is allow the utilities to cut brush and trees away from power lines, something currently outlawed in CA. That’s it - all they have to do is cut the same reasonable sized safety zones around power lines they have everywhere else in the US.
They can, but they are much harder/more expensive to maintain. And if you get floods, power will take weeks to restore as the entire underground system has to drain before you can run electricity again.
On top of which, very high tension power lines cannot necessarily be run underground due to the need to inspect them and keep EMI/RFI radiation away from people.
