The Big Apple has sent local homeless families to 373 cities across the country with a full year of rent in their pockets as part of Mayor Bill de Blasios Special One-Time Assistance Program. Usually, the receiving city knows nothing about it.
City taxpayers have spent $89 million on rent alone since the programs August 2017 inception to export 5,074 homeless families 12,482 individuals to places as close as Newark and as far as the South Pacific, according to Department of Homeless Services data obtained by The Post. Families who once lived in city shelters decamped to 32 states and Puerto Rico.
The city also paid travel expenses, through a separate taxpayer-funded program called Project Reconnect, but would not divulge how much it spent.
Add to the tab the cost of furnishings, which the city also did not disclose. One SOTA recipient said she received $1,000 for them.
Not only are officials in towns where the citys homeless land up in arms, but hundreds of the homeless families are returning to the five boroughs and some are even suing NYC over being abandoned in barely livable conditions.
DHS said 224 SOTA families have ended up back in New York City shelters.
About 56 percent of the families move out-of-state, costing the city an average of $15,600 in annual rent. Thirty-five percent move within city limits with an average rent of $20,500, and 9 percent move elsewhere in New York state, costing approximately $17,900.
In Newark, home to 1,198 SOTA families, the city is in the process of passing an ordinance to ban New York from sending us SOTA clients, said city spokesman Mark Di Ionno.

Just curious about the tax angle.
Who generates the Form-1099?
How is this “gift” of public funds reported on the recipient’s tax return?
I recall the mid 1960s when in NYC busloads of bums were sent to Mayor John Lindsey, courtesy of our Southern states. The promise was instant welfare, and were they right!!!
Who wouldn’t take a ticket from NYC in winter to Hawaii?
This is why Hawaii now looks like a third-world ghetto. Worst “homeless” situation in the country.
Send em to Mexico.
Reminds me of when NYC sent some of their homeless to Chester, NY near where we were living, about 65 miles NW to a former women’s prison owned by the city. There were a rash of muggings, assaults, burglaries etc. In what can only be described as cluelessness, or shrewdness one of the Town’s councilmen told the local media he was “shocked and concerned” about the sudden increase in CCP applications at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office as well as the surge in rifle and shotgun sales at the then newly opened Dick’s Sporting Goods Store and other gun shops in the area. Wouldn’t you know it, the crime rate in Chester plummeted overnight and the city soon after stopped bussing their homeless up there and eventually sold the site at a YUUUGE loss. An armed society IS a polite society.
Hawaii! I wish I was homeless.
Does Tulsi know about this “greyhound therapy?”
Will deBlabbermouth do this for ‘irregular’ immigrants? With what True-dope has done to Alberta (let alone what he has done to democracy in Kanadhar) and since it is currently snowing, a high of 15°F and gusts up to 30 mph, I need a break.
If I visit NYC and claim refugee status, can I be assured that deBlabbermouth will send me, all expenses paid, plus 6 months rent, to Hawaii? I’M IN! In six months, the winter in AB will have subsided. I could do with a six month, all expenses paid, vacay in Hawaii. Thank you NYC taxpayers. You DO get what you deserve!

If someone gave me free tickets to HI I’d sell them. Not setting foot in that $#ithole.
You sound like you’ve got a great idea about another angle to investigate. Hoping someone out there can answer that.
The politically correct position of the pols and homeless industry in Hawaii is to deny this is happening, although everyone knows it is.
Honolulu in particular has become a very dangerous place with gangs of crazy and dangerous derelicts wandering the streets everywhere, crapping and pissing everywhere, and assaulting people and stealing everything that isn’t locked down.
Note that the Ninth Circuit has ruled that nothing can be done about it, so it just gets worse and worse. Although people are going to be arming themselves at some point.
At least they won’t freeze to death.
Might explain how we got a billion Somalis in the Twin Cities Metro area!!
Spreading the diversity, isn’t that nice?
Only their tax accountants know. The biggest problem is where to declare the mortgage deduction.
I am boots-on-the-ground in Hawaii and I can tell you FOR SURE, we are being overrun with dirtbag crazy homeless vagrants. Never before seen here, known by none. NOT from here. Sleeping on sidewalks, scaring the tourists, invading our scrublands and setting up camps. Even in drainage tunnels; entire underground communities. Spooky s#it. Local LEOs powerless to do anything, all operating within the constraints of a weak and feckless State government. Governor of Hawaii sits in his office;picking his nose. State Reps and Sens: Hirono, Schatz, Gabbard, and Case = worthless Liberal scolds and phonies. Hawaii Republican Party= AWOL
Gee, if Newark gets away with doing that, won't that open the door for other cities to get uppity and reject illegal aliens or even Somalis?
