Washington (CNN)Former US Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina died Monday, her family said in a statement. She was 66.

"We are heartbroken to share that Kay left us unexpectedly this morning," the Hagan family said. "Kay meant everything to us, and we were honored to share her with the people of North Carolina whom she cared for and fought for so passionately as an elected official."

A local newspaper reports that she died after a three-year battle with encephalitis caused by Powassan virus, a tick-borne disease that frequently causes severe illness with a ten percent mortality rate.

Hagan's widower, Chip, is a transaction lawyer. The Hagans had three children: Jeanette, Tilden, and Carrie.[76] Kay Hagan had a 2012 net worth of approximately $24 million.

After the end of her U.S. Senate term, Hagan became a resident fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics.

While in Washington, D.C. in December 2016, Hagan became ill with a type of encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and was admitted to a hospital. Hagan was diagnosed with Powassan virus. In a 2019 article, Hagan's husband reported that "Kay’s ability to speak is limited, but her comprehension is very good. She can speak, but it's slow and labored."

She died on October 28, 2019, from complications of Powassan virus. She was 66 years old.

Now I feel both blessed and scared with 80 candles staring in my face. If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have stayed away from all those all you can drink office parties, and chased fewer broads when I was single...umm actually not!
