Brig. Gen. Dave Hodne: 'Those impossibilities are on the floor here today'
U.S. Army leaders are one step closer to deciding on a supplier for its Next Generation Squad Weapon system after a whos who in weapons makers unveiled their progress.
The 2019 Association of the United States Armys annual meeting impressed officials with prototype 6.8mm rifles and automatic rifles by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems inc., Textron Systems, and Sig Sauer Inc.
Each company is vying for the opportunity to replace the 5.56mm M4A1 carbine and the M249 squad automatic weapon used in combat units.
Military leaders essentially want a weapon that boasts the firepower and range of a machine gun with the precision of a rifle.

Yea. Those are kids though.
It works until it fouls the upper enough that it doesn’t work.
I’ll stick with my piston guns - SR556, FAL, Saiga 12, etc.
Ping.
Brownells actually put out a decent piston AR recently. I could never FOR di over piston in good faith.

I have a registered M16A1.I have never had a jam or failure to feed in 15K rounds. The calcium carbonate was there as a PH adjustment, not to adjust the burn rate.I’ve loaded thousands of rounds using WC844 ball powder-no problems. But IMR 8208 was the original intended powder.
Its way past time that 5.56 got replaced.
Its not the caliber thats the problem. Its the bullet. Give our guys something in the 70 grain range, preferably a soft point, and itll drop bad guys right there.

The Tavor in the hands of a trained soldier is within 5% as fast as the M4 at mag change per the Israelis who have issued both. Catch is, we have SO many people that can’t seem to get another manual of arms other than the AR’s down that it’s not even funny.
Case in point, the guys in countries that run the modern AK variants - many of those guys can run the ‘slow’ AK a *lot* faster than you’d think.

The Tavor is in the same ballpark. It’s one of the few bullpups that is, but it’s no slouch.
Technically, that’s an AR-18 upper that will accept AR-15 lowers. I’ve seen it and am interested in getting one; my problem is that I’ve seen *so* many DI guns jam or have problems at the range due to the DI system in the last 40 years that I cannot trust the system. It only gets worse if you fire suppressed with all the crap blowing back in your face. I’ll stick with piston guns.
Mil-spec a piston system, Im interested. Each manufacturer makes their own parts. My ar and a m16 will swap parts. Keep any of them clean and lubed theyll run. Pistons run cooler and cleaner in the receiver area. I like the ar plateform but anything can be improved.
Ha. Ziga is a buddy of mine. I just shot with him in Finland not too long ago. They are awesome folks.
For a long time I have wondered why don’t they change the 3 round burst to two, and have every other round in the mag, an Ap with the other a 55 grain.
Use two round burst as standard with the semi auto when it doesn’t matter what bullet is used. Also go back to 20 inches. That is still a pretty short barrel. Have the sights aligned for the 68 grain ap. The close range with the 55 grain would make little difference.
HK’s M27 IAR is a mil-spec, accepted for general issue, piston gun.

The Marines are issuing those to every Marine in an infantry squad now.
Um, wouldn’t you see the point of impact shift between each projectile?
sure but as long as one is with the sights it would be OK. Also you could use see through mags and have a line on one cartridge which would show what was in the chamber at that time.
One would have to hold under with the 55 grain and be on sight with the 68. For anything closer than 200 yards it probably would not make a difference.
Thats interesting I havent built an ar recently wonder how the wife will take this news.
Yeah, but if you fire a two round burst, you’re looking at firing two projectiles with significantly, even radically different points of impact versus your point of aim. That’s not a good thing. If you wanted to hit your target and nothing but, you’d have problems. I also can’t see that a soldier or Marine under stress is going to remember to check their mag to see which round they have in the chamber.
There are 4 possible points of impact. 1, POI using 55 grain on semi. 2, POI using 68gr. ap. 3, POI with double burst with 55 gr. fired first, and 4, POI with double burst and 68gr round fired first.
Still I suspect it could be worked out, especially if the last two happened to be very close.
It depends on who wins the competition. Sig is going with a hybrid brass and steel case. General Dynamics is using a composite case. Textron is using its cased telescoped ammunition.
"Who wins" will consider both the weapons and the ammo.
I wonder if Beto knows that bullets fired from an AR-15’s 16” barrel have more energy than those fired from the military’s M-4s.
Not really...I’m certain that he doesn’t know.
Sweet rig!
