Army thrilled as next-gen 6.8mm squad weapons once thought 'unachievable' are revealed

Brig. Gen. Dave Hodne: 'Those impossibilities are on the floor here today'

U.S. Army leaders are one step closer to deciding on a supplier for its Next Generation Squad Weapon system after a who’s who in weapons makers unveiled their progress.

The 2019 Association of the United States Army’s annual meeting impressed officials with prototype 6.8mm rifles and automatic rifles by General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems inc., Textron Systems, and Sig Sauer Inc.

Each company is vying for the opportunity to replace the 5.56mm M4A1 carbine and the M249 squad automatic weapon used in combat units.

Military leaders essentially want a weapon that boasts the firepower — and range — of a machine gun with the precision of a rifle.

That’s not even close to what the ammunition will look like.

If it works in any weather, sand, dirt, mud, etc. and our troops like it get it done. They are the best, get them the best. IMO

It’s way past time that 5.56 got replaced. It was inadequate in Vietnam (if the M16s actually managed to fire). Talk about putting contractors and bureaucrats ahead of the troops.

Is there such a thing as an official NATO round and weapon standard?

.. or is technology evolving like our NATO relationship that will eventually create huge black markets for old ammo&weaponry? just like the old days.

The Russians have a PK variant called the PKP that uses Lewis Gun style convective air cooling, and it looks like they’ve solved the need to change the barrel frequently. Hopefully we’re looking at something similar for the squad automatic replacement here.

There are a number of NATO standards, but the thing is that nobody is really happy with the 5.56 SS109 and successors any more and it looks like the 5.56 is too small to do what people are wanting it to do now. Many 5.56 weapons may be convertible to 6.8, though.

That’s not even close to what the ammunition will look like.

It is if Sig Sauer wins. Sig is going with conventional brass ammo.

So, with this new weaponry for ‘assaults’ can we now keep our ARs as NOT assault weapons?... Stupid question, self, leftists think 1022s are assault weapons.

From what I have read and actually tested myself, the 5.56 with the heavy bullets does fine in several respects.

It shoots flat, penetrates well, and has low recoil. The real problem is that it does not hit hard. Part of that is due to the short barrels in the M4.

They could probably do a lot worse than the 6.5X50, Jap.

I wonder if Ruger will make a mini-14 in this new caliber it is adopted by the Army?

Yep, the wacko leftists consider any semi auto an assault weapon.

That’s why SIG won’t win.

But, the AR15 will no longer be a military weapon either. At least here anyway.

6.5x50 is a lot closer to a full power rifle round than they are looking for. Also, the 5.56 sucks against modern opponent body armor.
