From what I have read and actually tested myself, the 5.56 with the heavy bullets does fine in several respects.
It shoots flat, penetrates well, and has low recoil. The real problem is that it does not hit hard. Part of that is due to the short barrels in the M4.
They could probably do a lot worse than the 6.5X50, Jap.
6.5x50 is a lot closer to a full power rifle round than they are looking for. Also, the 5.56 sucks against modern opponent body armor.

I’ve had a wildcat caliber 260 AAR (6.5mm w/necked down 7mm case w/40 degree shoulder) for over 50 years.
It’s deadly accurate with 100gr bullets and not shabby with 120gr.
I wonder if Beto knows that bullets fired from an AR-15’s 16” barrel have more energy than those fired from the military’s M-4s.
Not really...I’m certain that he doesn’t know.
