Now the fun begins, the cop is going to try to get off.

If the victim was a White male, the cop would walk, as he was quaking in his boots fearing for his life.

He may have trouble slipping out of this one though.

Don’t Reuters or Yahoo have any literate editors?

Wasn’t the gun reported by the only witness in the room - the 8YO child?

If so, we received critical information after the officer had been tried and convicted in the court of public opinion and has already left his job.

What is the actual truth I wonder. Why was this information withheld while the public was informed of just the kill?

I can only think we should dismiss initial reports by any MSM outlet for a few days. We never get the full truth.

If this is true it lends credibility to any “self defense” claim. And given that it was late at night it could be argued that the woman, too, had reason to be fearful.

It is a bad case.it would have been far better for the officer to announce himself, even if it had meant somebody getting away.

The cops have a saying that they will get the guy, even if not for this crime. They will get him for another.

“The noises were Dean, 34, and his partner “

First I’ve heard mention of a partner. So the other cop didn’t think to ring the bell or knock on the door or announce themselves as police either?

Pointing a firearm, by accident or design, at a LEO doesn’t usually end well.

Police need to announce and identify themselves.

Snooping around the bushes of somebody’s house is a BAD idea.

I watched the video. Cop is sneaking around the house, in the dark, quiet, with a flashlight, not announcing himself. She’s IN her house. What would you do or think? I’d be pointing the gun at whoever it was too.

This video should be used by cops on how NOT to operate. It’s unbelievable. I play tennis with guys here in Texas and nobody can believe how stupid that cop was. Sneaking around like that at night. She had no idea who it was out there. And that’s his fault.

That woman was a good lady. Taking care of her nephew, her mom, and trying to get into medical school. And I actually feel bad for the cop too. His life is ruined all because of his own mistakes. Monumental tragedy. So so sad....

I don't care if she did or not. He was outside of her house. She had legal right to have gun, just like any of us. Trigger happy cop shot her, maybe on sight of gun or not. His fault, shame on anyone trying to make it her fault, blaming his situation on her being black.

I can see myself in the same situatioin--in my office at gun bench cleaning gun, I hear noise or see movement in backyard. I pick up gun to look. Trigger happy cop sees me with gun, shoots. My fault I didn't answer the door? Maybe he was following someone from neighborhood into my yard, whatever. Fact is he was in my yard, saw me with gun, shot me. That is close to what occured to this poor woman. It is wrong and indefensible and should scare and outrage all gun owners. The cop should be tried, convicted, AND executed as example to all cops to respect private gun owners, to respect civilians, to protect and serve, not spot and kill.

I have read the comments on this tread it has many strange comments, never saw so many Jailhouse Lawyer Comments..... the whole episode could have been avoided if the cop had just done what the Parkland School Cop did, just stay under cover in the car and stop trying to do your duty. Isn’t that what we pay cops to do..If they get out of the car....They should JUST TAKE THE BULLET WITHOUT COMPLAINT?/S

Geeeeee, you’d think the very first thing that would be reported was she pointed a gun at the cop. IF THAT WERE TRUE. Instead the very first thing reported was that she was unarmed...

If the woman actually had a gun, and was pointing it at the window, then she was protecting herself from an unknown intruder. It would be like anyone else, perhaps a burglar, encroaching into into this woman’s back yard at night. She has a right to defend herself. The cop had no right to be there unannounced.

This the Minneapolis Somali cop shooting all over again. In Minneapolis, woman calls the cops to investigate a possible sexual assault, cops arrive, and shoot the woman who called them. In this case, a neighbor calls cops to check on the woman next door, cops arrive and kill said woman.

What was it Reagan said? The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government Police Department and I'm here to help.

The prosecution case has been made and the policeman has been duly convicted. If the facts presented so far are the whole story, I would say the conviction is probably correct. At some point, however, the defense case must be presented and that could alter the verdict. I don’t have any first hand information but am curious if anyone would change their guilty verdict if the following situation was proven at trial:

A two person team consisting of a very senior officer accompanied by a junior officer was dispatched for a welfare call. The junior officer remained near the patrol vehicle while the senior officer approached the front door, knocked and identified himself. Receiving no response, he instructed the junior officer to investigate the rear entrance while he remained at the front. It being dark in the back yard, the junior officer, using his flashlight, carefully made his way toward the back door, being alert for anything moving in the yard. Before arriving at the back door where he intended to knock and identify himself, he observed sudden movement at the window and a pistol being pointed at him. Following his instinct and self preservation training, he immediately fired at what he considered a deadly threat.

The above is only speculation. It is certainly possible, but quite unlikely, that the officer just wanted to kill someone and took advantage of this situation to satisfy his blood lust. We will not know until all evidence is presented. In the meantime, the police chief and city officials have a motivation to keep the city from being burned down and those who harbor hostility and suspicion of police will use the incident to reinforce those feelings. At this point, the officer is on his own and had better get a good lawyer and hope for a fair jury.

The idea that the mere presence of a gun, allows a police officer to be justified in a shooting, simply cannot coexist with a nation who’s citizens right to be armed is God given.
