Bad as that word is to use in polite company and much as I loathe Cuomo, I’ll defend him on this since he wasn’t using it to deride black people but, instead, to show how Italians were treated and he was using it in quotes. That being so, it was an appropriate use of the word, which definitely shouldn’t be banned from the English language.

I heard that “wop” was an abbreviation of “without passport.” Supposedly many of Italian immigrants at Ellis Island did not have passports.
