Three men were killed Friday night when they crashed a vehicle into a barrier activated by a security forces gate sentry at Robins Air Force Base, according to a base news release.
The Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the FBI have been asked to help in identifying the men, said Houston Coroner Danny Galpin.
The men had no identification on them, said Galpin, who was summoned to the crash scene.
The incident unfolded about 9:30 p.m. when a vehicle approached the Russell Parkway gate that is an entrance way onto the base, according the release.
The driver failed to stop as ordered by the gate sentry, who activated a security barrier when the vehicle sped through the gate, according to the release.
The vehicle hit the barrier at a high rate of speed, the release said.
Galpin said the barriers are down in the ground, but rise when activated.
The driver and one passenger were pronounced dead on scene, the release said. The other passenger was taken to Houston Medical Center, where he later died, according to the release.
Agree. If they were legitimate but drunk soldiers, you’d expect identification on them or by their peers.
Seems that’s the case!
Can you describe This
Barrier?
Sounds like it was more
Than a couple speed Bumps.
Hand to God. North entrance, off Victory Drive. I don’t have to prove myself right. If you think If I’m lying, prove me wrong.
Probably gonna need some new paint
I don’t know - if it was a bunch of obviously looking terrorists (whatever that might look like!) I don’t think the statement would need that “tragic” and touchy feely stuff in it. But, if it looks like a bunch of college frat boys having too much to drink and making a wrong turn ....
I seem to recall at one military base (or nuclear site?) that I was working at they had those pop-up barriers both before and after the guard shack where you would stop to give ID and a search. Thankfully most searches were pop the hood, look in the back of the truck and you are on your way.
One time I had to empty out my entire truck of all my gear, open up every box - it took over an hour!
See reply #42
Put a Dominos sign on it and be waved right through.
This reminds me of early 2002, when I was working across the GW Parkway from the NSA portion of Fort Meade. Some bozo had stolen a semi tractor in Baltimore and drove down the parkway at high speed. He took the exit leading to a gate into NSA Headquarters.
He stopped his truck after he saw the gate with armed guards out front and an M113 APC behind it. One of my security buddies talked to the .50 cal gunner in the APC. He said he had his finger on the triggers, about to fire, when he saw the truck braking hard.
The M-113 stayed at the gate, manned by Army Guardsmen, for another year, until the barriers were completed.
Nope. I can’t go around and find out what happens at every gate on every post. I know that entrance. I believe you. I just cited three different experiences I’ve had in two (also) specific places. I guess I look suspicious.
I was in England 1991 - 1992. I was security with my company, detailed to a facility in England we were building for DOD. The USAF Security Services from the nearby RAF/USAF base were responsible for securing the perimeter of the facility, while my company provided security inside the fence during construction.
I was given Field Grade Officer travel orders, so I could give “orders” to the SS types on the job. I’m glad I only had to exercise that command authority once. There had been a fire alarm while I was there early one morning, but there was no sign of smoke or fire, so I ordered the guards to keep the USAF fire department out. I had confirmed this with the Colonel commanding the facility just that evening. Wheee! A false alarm, Thank The Lord.
The Young Men With Guns were cool, but they liked their stories of accidental killings during security exercises, and ghost stories while patrolling the old WW2 facilities.
Even odder that no description of the deceased was given.
Every military base has clearly posted signs USE OF DEADLY FORCE AUTHORIZED along fences, entrances, secure areas, etc.
I remember at Subic Bay in the 80s some GI walked through one of the gates from Olongapo, and disregarded the orders to stop. The guard shot him dead. He was probably intoxicated, but thats no excuse (see deadly force authorized).
Its not tragedy, its stupidity.
Last paragraph makes no sense. Robbins is in Georgia
Put this on the very interesting list. Hope we learn more
I'm an old Air Force brat, and that's exactly what we used to call them. Now they're "security forces." Personally I like Apes better!
What do you all think of this ?
As reported in the referenced article...
“The Air Force Office of Special Investigations and the FBI have been asked to help in identifying the men, said Houston Coroner Danny Galpin.”
Later on, from https://www.robins.af.mil/News/Article-Display/Article/1981620/three-killed-after-vehicle-hits-barrier-at-robins-gate/ we find...
“The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of families.”
Makes me wonder if their fingerprints or other bio-metric information were on file with the authorities for the I.D. to occur so quickly.
You still need valid Identification AND authorization to get on military facilities. If you do NOT have valid DoD ID, you need to go to the pass office and present additional documents, including a contract, ID, etc. If you live in a state where the DL meets Real ID requirements, and you have a valid reason to enter the base, that DL is scanned and input into the system for the specified period. Scanning your Real ID DL is actually far more secure than the old paper passes. If I leave my ID at home, I don’t get on base.
No identification on them yet they say they aren’t affiliated with the base.
Military folk don’t go anywhere without their ID. Its like its a a part of us. 3 men, none with ID is certainly not normal, but among military, it just wouldn’t happen.
If they were at all legit to be on base, they could have had the DoD DBIDS photo-ID card but “no ID” means no ID, I guess.
