There was an episode of The Good Wife about this subject.
On the program Chumhum was the defacto Google. They didn’t try to hide that.
But on the program Chumhum’s recognition program kept labeling/interpreting black people as “animals”. That prompted a lawsuit (on the program, not real life).

Google is a multi-BILLION-dollar company
And they’re cheaping out with lousy $5 gift certificates? Not even cash??
So Google not only is (a) spying on us (b) trying to suppress conservatives (c) trying to sway the next election, but now they’re also (d) such jerks they want to buy personal data for a cheap-ass $5 gift certificate

Facial recognition programs have trouble with dark images.
Black people have dark skin.
In an effort to improve their algorithms they needed more data.
It's not just dark images, it's the lack of color variations from shadows and across the face. Facial recognition generally forms a general shape based on the darker eyes/undernose. Lighter forehead/cheeks/nose. Especially for darker black people, the math that 'blurs' the image into the general matrix for a face, creates more of a dark circle, not a general eyes/nose. So unless lighting is really good, it tends to not work as well for them.
