Russia offers Saudi Missile Defenses After Attack
Times of Israel ^ | 9/16/2019 | AFP

Posted on 09/16/2019 1:50:22 PM PDT by mikeIII

Putin offers to sell Saudi Arabia its missile defense systems in the wake of the attack on its oil facilities.

“We are ready to help Saudi Arabia so that she can protect her territory,” he says.

“She can do so in the same way that Iran has already done in buying the S-300 Russian missile system and the same way that Turkey has already done in buying the S-400 Russian missile system,” Putin adds at a press conference in Ankara, alongside the Turkish and Iranian leaders.

The US has blamed Iran for the attack on the Saudi oil facilities.

What they need is Doppler radar blimps used to detect low flying aircraft like used for drug interdiction. Integrated with a SAM system it can provide the look down, shoot down coverage to defend against the Kh-55 knock offs.

[This is a political move to drive a wedge between the gulf States and the US.]

I don’t think there’s any contest. The Gulf states know Russia can’t protect them from invasion or evict an invader after the fact. However, Trump’s reluctance to punish Iran for hammering the Gulf states via attacks on shipping and now oil production infrastructure is probably giving them heartburn. For decades, the Gulf kingdoms have acted as weapons depots for the West, complete with Western contractors to maintain their weaponry, so that we can simply fly in men and operate their equipment, in the event they are invaded by hostile foreign powers. This scenario first played out during Desert Shield, when the 82nd and 101st landed in Saudi Arabia to dissuade Saddam from crossing the Iraqi/Saudi border.

The Gulf kingdoms’ justifiable fear of palace coups means they can’t let their people get too proficient, lest they turn those weapons on the royal palace. And in their defense, it has to be said that the Saudis and Kuwaitis covered most of the cost of Desert Storm, for us doing something we would have needed to do, anyway, to prevent Saddam from unifying the region’s oil resources under a single banner and really super-charging his quest to become a latter day, world-conquering Muhammad reincarnated.

It’s a big change since the days of hero worship and love for Putin here on FR. Of course that was during the Obama administration and way too many FReepers thought Putin was awesome simply because he wasn’t Obama.

he makes a decent point... I suppose...

Isn’t Saudi filled up with “the best” American arms deals can sell them?

Maybe they need better equipment? Rather than operators?

Because, I don’t have much faith in their operators who were trained by Jewbacca in New Mexico...

Neither does he?

Why do you think that President Trump is being encouraged to attack Iran?

Why do you think the attack against Iran that almost happened recently was called off at the last moment?

The correct assets to be used against the S-400 simply weren’t in place, and someone in our military pointed this out to President Trump at the last minute, IMO.

Make no mistake, Putin is exceptionally eager to show Russian hardware taking down American assets, especially after Russian hardware was shown to be expensive junk when not properly applied against American military equipment. Throw in the massacre of Russian mercenaries and you can easily see Putin’s motives.

Russia REALLY wants a test bed of their S-400 against our F-35.

They’ve had ample opportunity against F-35s and F-22s overflying and attacking targets in Syria.

The Saudis just contracted in late 2018/early 2019 to buy radar and missile defense equipment and weapons from Raytheon and Lockheed. I don't think any of it has been delivered yet.

“”I’d hate to think this was just Putin using a protection racket to sell his missile system.””

Sure sounds and smells like it, doesn’t it? Probably sells them the missiles that Iran shoots at SA also. What a world!

But Russia had a fit when we provided a missile defense system for Poland, right???

Of course that was during the Obama administration and way too many FReepers thought Putin was awesome simply because he wasn’t Obama.

You did not understand, then.

FReepers thought Putin was awesome in comparison to Obama.....a strong leader, looking out for his national interests vs a weak man-child that never earned anything in his life.

Then we got Trump, the US version of Putin.

“” “” My first thought ... Is Putin suggesting that he knows the U.S. detected the missiles, but failed to stop them?”” “”

Why suggest? SA has the very best toys from Raytheon catalog.
Obviously none of them worked.
