Flint, Mich.
A Southwestern High School teacher says her car was stolen from the school parking lot by a student and is accusing the school district and police of not doing anything.
Special Education teacher Mary Toth spoke exclusively to Fox 66/NBC 25 News.
Toth says on August 13th the student was supposed to be helping her clean her classroom. She says she left her purse in the classroom when she stepped out. She says when she returned, she later discovered that money and keys were stolen from her purse.
She says the student then stole her 2015 Chevy Malibu from the back parking lot. She says minutes after her car was stolen, she looked at surveillance video with four other administrators and they all identified the student. But nearly one month later, her car has yet to be returned and she says charges have not been filed. She says days after this happened the student was also back in school.

I think that perhaps this school district is suffering from the same issues as the district in Broward County does. They don’t punish criminally liable students, and basically let them run wild until they seriously harm someone else or themselves.
I would report it to my insurance company and possibly ask insurance whether or not they can sue the PD for declining to retrieve stolen property. As long as she has a copy of the initial police report, I’m assuming that her insurance will handle it. It is also possible that she could sue the school district and the kid, or his family if he is underage.
I guarantee that a potential lawsuit will get that PD’s tail in gear. Sometimes even the threat is enough.
If so, is the Criminal Code out the window and anarchy prevails?
"Toth told NBC 25 that she asked school administrators why nothing had been done to discipline the student. She said school officials told her they couldnt deny the students right to an education."
It is Flint.
And this is the way the Flint police and school districts act.
No one living in the area is especially surprised.
Of course she reported it to the cops and ins. Company. You think the ins company would pay for her car rental without her reporting it stolen? until reported stolen, you as owner and not ins company would be responsible for damages.
She did.
Your response sounds very believable.
I didn’t know she was a Special Ed Teacher. That, according to many, gives the student carte blanc in doing what ever the hell they wish to do and can get away with.
My Governor, Gavin Newsom just signed a law making it even harder to suspend or expel troublesome students. Why?
Because ‘too many’ of this students were black.
Do you know what kind of student is enabled by such asinine laws? Students like Nicklas Cruz, the boy who shot and killed 17 people at his school in February of 2018.
I don’t expect the district to legally discipline the kid. But if he is attending school, why don’t the cops arrest him at school?
Right. It’s the police that haven’t filed charges yet. I mean it’s grand auto theft. It’s possession of a stolen vehicle. We are talking felony.
Spot-on for the teacher, assumption is valid for the student.
The school district stated that they “cannot deny the student the right to an education.”
Try as I might, the only racism I see at every turn is against whites. After viewing that beating the man received in Minneapolis, I’m trying hard to only expose the bias and not let it bias me.
Best to ask Police Chirf Tim Johnson.
He's the one with all the gold stripes and braid.
Security cameras. They’re everywhere.
This isn’t 1962 any more.
You raise valid points. I dont know why the police arent moving against the teen. I was just describing why the school district may have acted as it did. As for the kids IEP, that info is going to be kept a closely guarded secret by the school and all of its employees.
The teacher may well be disciplined for reporting the crime to the police as absurd as that might sound. The district might be very reluctant to cooperate with the police in their enquires.
“Charges have not been filed....”
Is she waiting for them to file? Why doesn’t she file?
You could not be more wrong.
Exactly. And then they blame one or more of the following...the weapon of choice, poverty, racism, sexism, and any of a number of "phobias".
And if those don't have the desired effect, they simply blame the victim or victims.
Nailed it.
I didnt understand that connection either. Why dont teachers have lockers in the main office for their valuables.
Michigan did away with tenure years ago.
