Catholicism preaches forgiveness, but this might be a tough ask.
The face of a Virgin Mary statue outside a Downtown Jersey City church was found covered with dog feces and the depraved vandal added a cigarette to the desecration.
The vandalism was reported by a parishioner who was entering St. Michael Church on Ninth Street just before the daily midday Mass, said the Rev. Thomas Quinn, the pastor.
I was shocked, saddened and angry, Quinn said. Without a doubt it was the work of someone who is emotionally disturbed. Still, there was some degree of deliberation there.

Sounds like the work of kids to me. Kids to jerky things all the time but they’re just juvies, not “depraved”.
Sorry this is a big deal it aint like t peeing a friends house this is depraved
Agree. Im not Catholic but I other peoples property should be left alone. Believe what you wanna believe..without destroying stuff you dont own or believe in.
There was a time when no Catholic Priest would hesitate to speak the truth "it was the work of someone who is possessed by the Devil"
But now most clergy have become psychologist wannabees.
Maybe the neighborhood Satanist. They tend to specialize in the desecration and debauching of Christian Icons.
Not many other groups would chose to do the necessary labor transferring befouled items from one place to another.
That’s what I would guess. Teenagers are often trying to show off to each other how edgy they can be. They are not good at reflecting on the wisdom of their actions. And they are so desperate to fit in that they are not necessarily going to try to prevent bad behavior led by one of them.
Old or young, it was some sick, pathetic f***.
Sad. The fools who damaged a Catholic statue are probably ignorant of ecclesiology. Don’t mess with her statues. One case around 1700 France happened when two guys were walking along and stopped at a statue of Mary. One guy was disgusted and said it was silly to have “graven images” of Mary and the Lord alone should get everyone’s attention. Well, Mary heard that and the one guy complaining suddenly went blind. He started crying and asking what to do. His friend smiled and said, “Fool. Why don’t you pray to Mary.” The one guy did, prayed to Mary and got his eyesight back immediately. She sent a kind but firm message to the one guy: don’t mess with her statues.
Our parish church was vandalized a few years ago, and the pastor had the same message for the vandal: “We will pray for whoever did this.”
However, at the same time, security cameras were installed, and the church started locking the doors earlier.
That’s what had to be done.
There are few Catholics left in these neighborhoods in Jersey City; the churches at this point are just museums commemorating America’s prime decades ago. They are meaningless to the flood of Asians and other “replacement Americans” filling the place. Filipinos are keeping some parishes alive there, but otherwise they are circling the drain.
However, at the same time, security cameras were installed, and the church started locking the doors earlier.
Good moves. Covered all the bases.
We may not be of this world or belong to it, but we still gotta live here.
And, when called, sometimes you have to be another persons karma.
