Philadelphia’s interim police commissioner has apologized for wearing a T-shirt in the 1990s that mocked the notorious Los Angeles police beating of Rodney King, saying she’s “profoundly sorry.”
The photo, from 1994, shows Christine M. Coulter, who is white, wearing a shirt that read: “L.A.P.D We Treat You Like a King,” a pointed slogan stemming from the 1991 videotaped beating of King by LAPD cops, whose acquittals sparked riots a year later.
An anonymous source sent the photo to the Philadelphia Inquirer in late August. Coulter, the first female commissioner of the 6,500-member department, said during a city council hearing Tuesday that wearin

I wish victims of these “gotcha” tactics would stop apologizing. She should have told her critics to go jump.
Seems to me that slogan was mocking LAPD for going overboard in subduing King.
Rodney was hopped up on PCP. So much so that nothing else, short of shooting him, would have stopped his violence.

And the riot afterwards was more of a pogrom against the Korean community, than an expression of “community outrage” at the LAPD.

I second you. King was tased and tore the barbs out like nothing and charged the officers. Very lucky he wasn’t shot. The officers used their batons and would stop when King complied. They didn’t want to go hands on with him and possibly let him get their weapons. The officers were acquited as the should have been.

I remember telling a high-school aged son of one of my sister’s lib friends that Rodney King was a crack-addled fool who was really lucky he didn’t get shot. He’d clearly not been exposed to that possibility in school.
