US lifts ban on old-style light bulbs
BBC News ^

Posted on 09/07/2019 5:00:16 PM PDT by ameribbean expat

The US is scrapping a ban on energy-inefficient light bulbs which was due to come in at the beginning of 2020. The rule would have prohibited the sale of bulbs that do not reach a standard of efficiency, and could have seen an end to incandescent bulbs. Many countries have phased out older bulbs because they waste energy. But the US energy department said banning incandescent bulbs would be bad for consumers because of the higher cost of more efficient bulbs. The Department of Energy said it had withdrawn the ban because it was a misinterpretation of the 2007 Energy Independence and Security Act. Specifically, the law stipulated that restrictions on bulbs could only be implemented when it was economically justified , Shaylyn Hynes, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy, told the New York Times. Activists say the government has come under pressure from manufacturers. " It makes zero sense to eliminate energy-saving light bulb standards that will save households money on electricity bills and cut climate change emissions," Appliance Standards Awareness Project executive director Andrew deLaski told the Washington Post. "Instead, the Trump administration is siding with manufacturers that want to keep selling outdated, energy-wasting light bulbs."

energy-inefficient light bulbs ...

OH NO!!!!

Forget all the gambling, drinking and other things that can’t be said that I’ve done in my lifetime, on top of all that i’m gonna keep using “energy-inefficient light bulbs”!!

Now there’s no chance to get into The Pearly Gates!

Sadly, MILLIONS would believe that God would deny you entry for that.

If they believed in God.

Nope, there are vacuum pumping companies and rodding outfits that depend upon the quarterly flush and push of the clogged distribution lines.

Those sewer lines do not have enough fall (change in elevation) to handle the reduced flow of waste water.

Please send a check.

"has come under pressure from manufactures..."

China is complaining?

Pretty much every incandescent light bulb you find at a retailer will say "Made in China".

I would imagine that since 2020 is only months away, lightbulb manufacturers would already have re-tooled their designs to meet the standards which were expected to come into effect under the Obama rule. Already, the new-style bulbs are almost the only thing I see on the shelves

And you’re going to hell because of it! :)

It was a commandment that was added later on.

These people are nuts and zealots in the truest sense of the word.

You mean I won’t be forced to buy those “10,000 hour” bulbs that go bad at 300 hours and get thrown into the landfill to poison the ground water?

Why do I keep having to replace these new-style bulbs that claim to have a ten-year life span?

Well they’ve finally gotten the light quality down pat, the cost down, and the things seem to last way longer than regular incandescents. And use way less electricity. I’m not in favor of the government mandating what kind of light bulbs we can use, but i’m happy with LEDs and am sticking with them.

Low flow light flush toilets get clogged in apartment buildings (ours), schools, universities, offices and restaurants and others. Lots of “out of order” signs.

Stupid. It doesn’t “save the planet.”

Al Gore should stick his head way down in one and see what’s wrong down there. Tell him it’ll stop climate change.

And then there’s the mercury cleanup that will occur in the future. You don’t really think folks are taking them to a special center, do you?

Agree. Some folks actually saved, overhauled and re-used their old toilets because those new ones must be designed for those little asian folks or something. They will not handle a traditional, full-sized, adult, American male turd. They have to be flushed 2-3 times to do it which defeats their purpose to start with.

Thanks to the federal government regulations, virtually all of our lightbulb manufacturing went to China. For example, although the law required CFLs, you could not manufacture CFLs in the U.S. because of hazardous substance laws (contains mercury). In my state they had the further absurdity that although you could only buy CFLs, it was illegal to dispose of them (again because they have mercury).

Trump’s also trying to supersede the rules on dishwashers so you can again buy working dishwashers in the U.S.

The government didn’t need to mandate anything. Technology was proceeding in the right direction all along. Nobody wants to pay more for electricity or buy things that last just a short time. The free market would have bore it out IF they had just left it alone. Just about everything the govt gets involved with outside the Constitution, gets screwed up.
