Hurricane Dorian Live Thread II
NHC/NOAA ^ | 2 September 2019 | NHC/NOAA

Posted on 09/02/2019 7:50:54 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catestrophic Hurricane Dorian was assigned Category 5 status by the NHC Sunday, September 1 at 0800. Since then Hurricane Dorian reached maximum sustained winds of 185 MPH, with gusts exceeding 220 MPH, and storm surge 18-23 feet above normal tide levels as it made landfall across Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Dorian became the strongest hurricane in modern records for the Northwestern Bahamas.

Dorian has wrought extreme wind and flood damage to Abacos and Grand Bahama Island as it crawled slowly across the Northern Bahamas.

All interests along the Atlantic coast should continue monitoring conditions and forecasts as powerful Hurricane Dorian moves very close to the US coastline. Evacuation orders have been issued for many Atlantic coastal communities in the Southeast US. Evacuations include multiple hospitals and nursing homes along the coast with anticipated dangerous storm surge and battering waves.

Wind speed is expected to weaken and fluctuate in the coming days as the storm moves northward.

People on the coastal areas will still have quite an impact from wind, rain, and storm surge. If by chance this doesn’t move as they’re predicting, and moves inland, those places will also be affected.

That would depend on what state it is. Was in Oregon for a time, the high desert was beautiful, I do not miss the politics.

When I saw Cantore reveling in the “thunder snow” he and his broadcast crew were waiting for, I thought to myself, “Wow, that guy has some issues!”.

We just got about a five minute rain dump and some wind. I am in Port St. Lucie. Felt like an outer band

Oy. That updated path looks like Brevard and Indian River Counties just got a lot more uncomfortable.

I don't envy you watching and waiting for days. Way too close for comfort in your location.

Within the two hours, both the Jensen Beach and Stuart Hutchinson Island bridges have closed to all but local residents.

Interesting. Why is everyone that is in the know, leaving East Florida, if it is going to hook north. Just a question.

Happens every storm threat with the bridges. My mom lives in Jensen and she was gonna come to my house but now wants to stay home. She lives in a rock solid old Jensen home that’s been standing since 1970.

".... Are people in Florida out of danger, now?..."

Absolutely not.

Evacuation orders are made ahead of the storm before anyone is certain exactly where it will land. But with a Cat 5 hurricane bearing down on the Florida coast just miles off shore, evacuation orders were the right thing to do.

The storm hasn't even hit the Florida peninsula yet. But with the high winds and heavy rain and storm surges, the destruction can still be major.

Statements like they "were unnecessary" are Monday morning, armchair quarterbacking after the fact. It's easy to look back and say that but before the storm hits land or passes by, not so much.

I understand the bridges closed to all but locals because too many lookie-loos were driving over to hang out and watch the surf. Not a wind issue at this point.

He took the video and posted it to his FB page this morning. The person streamed it on YouTube. Not live but close to it. I saw a satellite dish on the side of his house out the window. If he gets thru alright he should give his builder a case of scotch.

Storm surge from slow moving storms tends to cause more flooding inland because surge from coast, and rainfall has no where else to go.

This is going to be a problem for Florida even if there is no direct hit.

Interesting about satellite feed...used to have it here. Got rid of it because it could not transmit through a thunderstorm. Drove us nuts because we get thunderstorms every day during summer.

On the other hand, when a hurricane blew through the satellite dish never lost a pixel, not a blip through the storm. Weird!

Fox has an info babe on. She’s at Juno Beach....looking all alone & windy & rain. Ooops....camera pans to a crowd on the beach enjoying the waves. There is a fine line between hyping things for ratings & genuine reporting. I don’t know what that line is. But, it’s going to get people killed by not reporting the truth.
