A captain that careful might have learned the fact the hard way on another boat!
When the boat is burning to the waterline, sticking with the boat probably isnt an option.

They were all asleep, trapped below deck and either burned to death or drowned. The boat was in 65ft water and 20yrds off shore.
So my question is do we ban all boats or ban all fire?
________
Agreed. I know nothing about this stuff, but why would they sleep all crammed together at the bottom of a boat when they were only 20 YARDS from shore? It seems somewhat strange to one (like me) who doesn't know about these arrangements.
I wouldnt sleep on a 75 boat that didnt have a bow hatch cover that had access.
Our 54’ certainly had a functional bow hatch, I would be hard pressed to believe they didn’t period.
I am going to guess that they died in their sleep, gassed from carbon monoxide or dioxide, before they were burned. The crew were rescued, but that was above desk where there was fresh air.
Weve owned a 40 ft sailboat for over 15 years. First thing hubby (working firefighter at the time) did was pull out the propane stove and put in an electric cooktop and an electric convection oven. He firmly said......no propane aboard this vessel. We did have a couple of the little one pounders for the bbq. Of course thats not really feasible for a commercial boat.
Yes. Ive been on enough commercial boats to know they all have escape routes and procedures. But at 3am trying to get past sleepy people and lots of dive equipment would be nearly impossible. Tragic.
That must’ve been one fast-moving fire. Maybe the fuel tank exploded or something.
Maybe the engine room apprentice went looking for a fuel leak with a match.
Yes, awful stuff. Fire is terrifying, witness the option some took to dive from the Towers on 9/11, or burn to death. I can’t imagine their last moments on that boat.
You are right
In need of a dock.
Was Kevin O’Leary around??

UPDATE: 5 crew members were rescued after jumping off the burning boat. 34 passengers who were sleeping below deck remain missing. “The crew was actually already awake and on the bridge and they jumped off.”
What a silly ass statement
No, a dive boat would have small cylinders of medical-grade O2 for emergencies, not enough to cause this...and if you’re thinking nitrox, they bank EAN32 so they don’t have to mix onboard.
I’ve been on this boat several times. The main access to the passenger sleeping are is the staircase near the galley. There is also an emergency escape hatch at the back of the sleeping area near the doorway to the back deck. However there’s no way 34 people are getting out that hatch in the event of this type of catastrophic fire.
