Drudge red banner headline says “34 dead”, then the link to a UK newspaper say “at least 34 feared dead” and later says “missing”.

What a bunch of BS our so-called “media” is.

We need to BAN all Flammable Fossil Fuels from boats

I worked on an albacore boat off of the SoCal coast in the summer of ‘65. Lot’s of interesting memories to say the least. I remember the captain being extra careful with the propane tanks. He turn them on and off every time we used the stove. As he put it, the propane is heavier than air and if there were a leak, it would all end up in the bilge. An explosion there and you lose the bottom of your boat, which, I was told was an important part of staying afloat.

Probably old news to you old salts, but it was a revelation to me—never would have thought of it.

When I was stationed in Santa Barbara at the Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment in the late ‘80’s to early ‘90’s I conducted annual inspections on the Conception. There is an emergency exit to the bow from below decks. The passenger berthing/bunks are rather cramped. The emergency exit is one person at a time on a vertical ladder if my memory serves correctly. Plenty of dive paraphernalia to get in the way of panicked half asleep folks. I will not speculate on the cause of the fire. The Coasties will be conducting a full investigation on the cause. If the vessel sank that will make it more difficult. I am endeavoring to remember her construction, but I believe she is/was FRP.

The fire must have happen after they all started their dives. Would explain why the crew has been rescued but no one else.

Unfortunately, no. It was 0100 (AM). The crew was sleeping on the top deck, apparently outside. The passengers were asleep in cabins below decks, according to one link up thread.

I am not surprised when media from outside a region breaks news ahead of local media. The local media might be holding off so as not to panic families or to prevent gawker from interfering in rescue operations.

Prayers up. Horrifying to think of these people going on a fun dive and ending up in a trapped inferno at sea. I hope and pray some struck out for shore and survived.

Thanks, after 20 years of being a CG Marine Inspector and conducting hundreds of inspection and it being 25 years since I retired, the memory of every hull is not fresh. I do remember that I conducted both Inspections for Certifications and Dry Dock Examinations on all their dive boats. At that time the hulls were in good shape. But at least 30 years of service is a long time for a vessel, and Mother Nature and the sea are not forgiving, EVER!

“What a bunch of BS our so-called “media” is.”

If newspapers actually still had beat reporters we might actually have a fact or 2 by now. Instead we have to wait for a press release — probably from the Coast Guard in this case.

Well it’s not like they can send a reporter to the scene.

I wouldn’t sleep on a 75’ boat that didn’t have a bow hatch cover that had access.

No but you could have a reporter at the dock in Santa Barbara where these boats are based. Maybe get a quote or 2 from the operators or land based rescue operators.

A dive boat is required to have oxygen on board. Very likely a source of an explosion if there was. A faulty regulator hook up, or a leak of any source would be dangerous.
