The government has asked the Queen to suspend Parliament just days after MPs return to work in September - and only a few weeks before the Brexit deadline.
Boris Johnson said a Queen's Speech would take place after the suspension, on 14 October, to outline his "very exciting agenda".
But it means the time MPs have to pass laws to stop a no-deal Brexit on 31 October would be cut.
House of Commons Speaker John Bercow said it was a "constitutional outrage".
The speaker, who does not traditionally comment on political announcements, continued: "However it is dressed up, it is blindingly obvious that the purpose of [suspending Parliament] now would be to stop [MPs] debating Brexit and performing its duty in shaping a course for the country."
It would be "an offence against the democratic process and the rights of Parliamentarians as the people's elected representatives", he added.
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said he had written to the Queen to request a meeting "as a matter of urgency... before any final decision is taken".
"Suspending Parliament is not acceptable, it is not on. What the prime minister is doing is a smash and grab on our democracy to force through a no deal," he said The PM, though, said suggestions the suspension was motivated by a desire to force through a no deal were "completely untrue".
He said he did not want to wait until after Brexit "before getting on with our plans to take this country forward", and insisted there would still be "ample time" for MPs to debate the UK's departure.
"We need new legislation. We've got to be bringing forward new and important bills and that's why we are going to have a Queen's Speech," he added.

The chances are high that the Queen will let this pass.
now if parliament is suspended, that gives it just about 20 days (10 working days) to call a vote of no confidence.
It seems far more likely that the UK will crash out with a no-deal on October 31 - my personal opinion is that there is no time for any opposition vote on this, but I could be wrong.
My initial reaction was Why would Boris ask Brian May and Roger Taylor to suspend Parliament, and how would they do it!?
British political process is not well known to me, but always seems more than a bit bizarre.
Hmmm...... play the Queen.
Checkmate
In addition, I would hope that the monarch would like the UK to remain a sovereign nation. Brexit is in her best interests, I think. By maintaining her political neutrality, perhaps she becomes more likely to get what she wants, without actually getting her hands dirty.
Charles, on the other hand, might be more likely to keep Parliament in session.
I had the same thought. Sometimes one really needs the article.
I realize one can’t exactly book Queen these days, but wouldn’t an array of Queen cover bands be more fun (and less dangerous) than anyone’s legislatures? Metalachi does a surreal “Bohemian Rhapsody” cover.

And what does George Clinton have to say about it?
This one is the most political since forever and is anti-Brexit too. Nasty little man.
Charles isn’t king - unless the Queen decides to abdicate now, which is not very likely imho.
The Queen will not comment on the politics. There is no precedence for what Boris has asked for, however whenever a PM asks for something, the Queen says yes.
Great post! This seems to have Trump’s hand in it. It is a necessary and brilliant move!
Sounds like advice Trump might give him...
Trump’s going to tweet about this and it will make liberal heads explode with conspiracy theories.
Exactly!
LOL
I saw Queen with Adam Lambert last Thursday. Heckuva show. The staging/visuals were just incredible. Lambert is pretty good - but clearly hes not Freddy Mercury.
Some on the net have been predicting a dissolution and call for snap elections. I don’t think anyone had thought of a suspension until now.
I know Predictit.org has a bet running for new elections prior to 10/31.
I suppose this is just another way to achieve the same thing without all the cost.
The last time it was asked for Queen to close parliament, it was a pretty popular move. Although the process is a bit elaborate and weird to us, it is fairly entertaining.
It does seem like a Trump move. Its time put an end to the stall tactics of the sniveling remainers
I’m glad you enjoyed the show.
My preference would be for her to enter the chamber by force (accompanied by the Coldstream Guards) during a debate and declare "You have sat here too long for any good you have been doing...", but that's just my romantic nature.
They've been discussing it for six months or more.
