Former Congressman Jason Lewis announced Thursday morning he is running for the U.S. Senate in 2020. Lewis, a Republican who lost his 2018 re-election bid to represent the 2nd Congressional District, will try to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Tina Smith. In his announcement, though, he targeted Rep. Ilhan Omar, the Democrat from Minneapolis who has been repeatedly criticized by President Donald Trump, just as much as Smith. We are at a crossroads in Minnesota and across this country not seen since the chaos and turmoil of the 1960s, Lewis said in his announcement. llhan Omar, with Senator Tina Smith marching in lockstep behind her, are leading a radical political movement that sees our Constitution and American values as dispensable relics. He later added: I refuse to sit back on the sidelines and watch our state, country, and way of life continue to come under blistering attack from radical politicians like Ilhan Omar and her footsoldier Tina Smith. Im going to fight back. Thats why today I am proud to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate. Smith was elected in a special election in 2018 to fill the remaining term of Al Franken, who resigned after several women accused him of inappropriate behavior. The seat is up for re-election in 2020. Lewis was a long-time conservative radio commentator who ran for Congress in 2016 and won. He served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives before losing in 2018 to Democrat Angie Craig. Earlier this year he told reporters that national Republican leaders had been encouraging him to run again.Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Ken Martin responded by calling Lewis Trumps hand-picked candidate.

Plenty of questionable vote counts, when Smith narrowly defeated Housley, last time around. There’s always hope!
Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party ...responded by calling Lewis Trumps hand-picked candidate....
Own it!
The lazy Trump voters, who stayed home in 2018, will be out in force with the big guy on the ballot.
Great guy, smart, and astute with a great radio voice. I hope he wins and will support him.
Is he the talk show host? (Rush fill-in) I could look it up, but its more fun seeng Freeper comments.
I prefer the phrase “marching in goosesteps” when discussing Democrats.
Can he win? No BS please. I knew James couldn’t win in Michigan but I’m all in for him this time.
He should be well positioned in a Senate race as he only lost his re-election race for the House by five points in 2018.
He can make up that ground in a statewide race.
how many times did minnesota do a recount until Al Franken ended up 'winning'?
I hope he avoids the Minnesota Democrat scam that handed a senate seat to Al Franken.
With the Trump Train rolling, this could be very good timing for Mr. Lewis.
I can only hope folks are seeing what a complete nitwit Klobuchar is, during this failed, mockery of a run for President. We need another strong Conservative to knock her out next time.
Difficult. He’ll need boatloads of money to compete and it doesn’t help he lost reelection to his House seat last year.
Finaly a fighter!
His debates with the box of rocks Smith, should be enlightening! Jason is very sharp on the issues.
Smith was elected in a special election in 2018 to fill the remaining term of Al Franken, who resigned after several women accused him of inappropriate behavior.
The seat is up for re-election in 2020.
Smith defeated Karin Housley in the regular election in 2018. Her Franken interim term had ended.
I think we’re saying the same thing.
No nominee should lack for money on our side. I even gave $50 to the underwear model who took the long time seat of the Swimmer if only for 2 years. If money makes him competitive we should be all in with small contributions to show how serious WE are.
