Sony, Harley-Davidson, Others Move Production from China to Thailand
IndustryWeek ^ | 8/19/2019 | Bloomberg

Thai officials glimpse a silver lining in the U.S.-China trade war as companies such as Sony Corp. move production to Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy. At least 10 firms are in the process of relocating some production to Thailand from China, according to the National Economic & Social Development Council. More than a dozen others could potentially choose Thailand, it said in a statement.

“We may not see the impact on the economy now, but in the second half of 2019, it could become a positive factor for growth,” the agency’s Deputy Secretary-General Wichayayuth Boonchit said Monday.

Trade tension is sapping growth in Asia’s export-dependent economies, sparking calls for looser monetary and fiscal policies. Nations such as Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand are also vying to lure investment from manufacturers seeking to escape U.S. tariffs on imports from China.

The 10 firms moving some manufacturing to Thailand include Sony, Sharp Corp., Harley-Davidson Inc. and Delta Electronics Inc. Most have finalized locations near Bangkok or in the Eastern Economic Corridor development zone on the east coast of Thailand, according to the economic and social development agency.

Earlier Monday, the agency said the country’s gross domestic product rose 2.3% in the second quarter from a year earlier, the slowest pace in almost five years, as the U.S.-China spat took its toll.

Remember the old joke?

“I’d rather push a Harley than ride a Jap bike.” Which the response was “you probably will”.

I was told by a avid HD rider that I didn’t understand the “prestige” of owning a Harley.
I told him Yeah I prefer to ride......

BTW I heard about a Yamaha Vmax the other day with under 8k miles for $2000. Trying to get it bought.

We are responsible. We practically handed them a modern industrial base and looked the other way as they pilfered tech and violated copyrights and trade agreements. We, the US did that willingly. Only Trump has dated to do something about it.

“15-20% more for a TV and other stuff made in those countries it will happen”

I’ve been looking at a Sony 65” TV at Costco. Its original price was ~$1650 - the sale price was $1350 - now it’s down to $1100.

I was one week to late landing a job at the new GM plant in Rayong, Thailand.

They needed a director/trainer for their emergency response team. The HR manager told me the position was filled one week before, but I would have been selected if he'd had my resume.

Oh well. Another missed opportunity. Life is full of them.

I agree 100% and I would rather they move back to the USA.

Many, many Democrats must be flung from office before anything like that could ever happen again.

I had a 125 cc Honda in Thailand way back in the 60's.

It was enough to get me and the girlfriend of the week around.

Move it to the USA. This is a draw not a win.

Besides, Harley is dying in the USA. Geezers are getting out of riding. They are no longer strong enough to manhandle 800 to 1,000 pound hunks of steel in the garage anymore. And Harleys still haven't put in a reverse gear, unlike Honda Goldwings.

Harleys are also very low on innovation. ABS is not standard on many models. Typically, the only innovation in HD is the color changes from year to year. They are still overweight, grossly underpowered, and ride like a one handled wheelbarrow.

Finally, young riders, the ones who keep any hobby in business, aren't willing to shell out ~$30,000 for a toy. They can buy a brand new BMW sport bike for ~$5,000. Besides, kids these days don't like noise. It's obnoxious.

So, my understanding is that HD is going to be introducing a new line and style of bike in Asia. Smaller. More nimble. For the Asian market.

At least, that's the consensus of the posters on the Harley Davidson forum.

It’s amazing to me that standing up a new factory, hiring workers, training, quality control, distribution networks, and everything else in a new country is STILL considerably cheaper than just making your product in the USA.

You would be amazed that it is only a tiny percent cheaper and that tiny margin is not passed on to the consumer. An across the board tariff of 10% would stop all of this BS.

Until then, it’s just more aliens doing the jobs Americans should be doing.

Hear, hear. Worth repeating.

There is much more at stake here than American jobs

There is nothing more important than American jobs.

That’s hardly a mainstream “antique” Jap bike. I’ve always had a soft spot for those “end of an era” very sophisticated two strokes. There’s a BMW and a Ducati in the shop now, and if I brought home another bike I’m afraid I’d be sleeping there also!

All products produced by China should be banned from being sold in America.

That is called an embargo. No one is talking about that yet, but I like it.
