The Trump administration implemented new policies on Wednesday in an effort to end the "catch-and-release" of family units entering the country illegally or applying for asylum.
In the past, the Department of Homeland Security has only been able to detain and process families together for 20-days. After that, they've been released into the United States and become unlikely to show up for immigration court dates months or years later. That practice is changing and DHS will now hold family units together, without separating children from parents, until their immigration hearing and full processing.
"Large numbers of alien families are entering illegally across the southern border, hoping that they will be released into the interior rather than detained during their removal proceedings. Promulgating this rule and seeking termination of the FSA (Flores Settlement Agreement) are important steps towards an immigration system that is humane and operates consistently with the intent of Congress," DHS released in a statement. "The requirements that help ensure that all alien children (both accompanied minors and unaccompanied alien children) in the Government’s custody are treated with dignity, respect, and special concern for their particular vulnerability as minors."
Acting DHS Secretary Kevin McAleenan is stressing the new policies will keep families together. The Trump administration has been harshly criticized by Democrats for separating children from "parents," who are often adults posing as family," in order to detain them past the 20 day maximum.
“Today, the government has issued a critical rule that will permit the Department of Homeland Security to appropriately hold families together and improve the integrity of the immigration system,” McAleenan said. “This rule allows the federal government to enforce immigration laws as passed by Congress and ensures that all children in U.S. government custody are treated with dignity, respect, and special concern for their particular vulnerability.”
McAleenan also discussed the move on Fox News earlier today.

Democrats are already reacting to the move, calling it "disgraceful."
This is disgraceful. https://t.co/2PmxnMW7D6— The Democrats (@TheDemocrats) August 21, 2019
Trump should open hotels and really make the libs heads explode
That would be so so funny
Good prediction. I’d not bet against it.
Free meals, free medical care, free education, free housing, only the guard have guns. Why would liberals complain about it? It sounds like their version of utopia.
Read later.
“Ill probably get some looks using it at parties but Id imagine a southerner would get some looks if he/she said fuggedaboutit :)”
HAHA! :D
First thing I would say to everyone at a party in New York is “Hey, how y’all doing”, and they would know right away oh we got a Southerner here. I’d be busted after one sentence.
I’ve heard that expression in person may be 10 times in my lifetime :)
If you don’t include TV and movies.
I was 6 when we went to visit the southern states so I don’t remember it.
And most of the other times I heard it, it was a yankee trying to sound unique :)
That makes a good response to when the dems start to squawk about families all locked up in concentration camps and eating dog food etc...
Send them back right away.
Launch them in a catapult for all I care.
I’d prefer “Catch and Catapult”
Same day that birth right citizenship is back on the table.
Deal with this Leftists.
More incoming tomorrow - try to keep up.
P.S. Why should we run concentration camps for illegals here, when it would be cheaper to operate them in Mexico?
I was thinking more along the lines o giving them to Sheriff Joe to put in his”tent city” in the desert.
“Today, the government has issued a critical rule”
The Left must once again rush to fund a harassing lawsuit, and impose on another District Judge in the Ninth Circuit to sacrifice their reputations (and possibly their future promotion prospects) by issuing another transparently partisan, legally baseless injunction.
There must be a limit to how many hack attorneys they have to throw at these suits at once. I’m guessing their A Team is already committed elsewhere.
“And when the heck did I start using ‘that there’?”
You must be reading my posts.
Bless your heart.
Two year backlog, so now crossing the border is a two year jail sentance with a 90% chance of a boot in the ass back over the wall at the end.
Free ride is over folks...
WINNING!
lol :)
I remember I posted a (bad) joke here.
And some kind soul said “Now that there is funny, I don’t care who you are”.
Then I saw it a bunch of times and then i started using it.
Next I’ll be wearing cowboy boots!!
Con-gress should completely decriminalize crossing the border. Maybe then people will see their real position.
Glad they’re doing this, though. It’s better than just letting them loose to roam around taking our welfare.
...free ice cream, and I'm in!
Those military bases should not “hold” them but kick them out.
I was asked, “What’s your reason for entering Canada.”
