On the eve of World War II, the Republican Party was a shell of the one that had dominated presidential politics from the Civil War through the onset of the Great Depression.
Two individuals saved the GOP and made it relevant again.
Dwight Eisenhower ran on an internationalist platform in 1952, favoring foreign aid to Europe, the new military alliance called NATO and an aggressive stance against Soviet Communism, thereby asserting U.S. world leadership. He vanquished his isolationist foe, Sen. Robert Taft, for the GOP nomination in 1952 and then won the first Republican presidential victory in 20 years.
In 1980, Ronald Reagan sought to move the GOP beyond its narrow confines in the Northeast and Midwest. He built on Eisenhowers internationalism, preaching limited government, free markets and supply-side economics policies designed to bring prosperity to ALL Americans, not just the well-connected.
Two signature issues restricting immigration and trade have pushed back on 60 years of Republican orthodoxy and dramatically changed the partys image and focus.
Trade policy is the first example. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), designed to marginalize China, has been shelved. Speaking of China, we are on the verge of a full-blown trade war with no end in sight and no clear end game. Presidential adviser Peter Navarro is an unabashed admirer of tariffs and believes they have contributed to our strong economy.
Most economists and virtually all CEOs would disagree.

What a tremendous filthy load of manure this Fox article is.
We should be alert for Chinese propaganda like this garbage.
Speaking of China, we are on the verge of a full-blown trade war with no end in sight and no clear end game.
I believe Trump sees an end game, and that U.S. Space Command plays into it (ala Reagan, USSR and SDI Star Wars).
This guy is a moron and knows nothing. Maybe he’s trying for a show on CNN.
Trade policy is the first example. The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), designed to marginalize China, has been shelved.
Total BS. The plan always was for China to join later when there would be less potential political opposition.
Yup, the NeverTrumpers are out in force.
All is lost!! Recession, racism, cant possibly win, gotta get those guns, Trump is crude and racist, his followers are deplorable.
What we need is to embrace the winning policies of Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and the Bushes. You know, the ones that lose. We need to follow those who have the courage of the lack of their convictions.
We need to get back to letting the press trash us while we beg for their approval and hope that someday they will really really like us and let us into their super fancy club.
We need to embrace globalism and flush American jobs away.
Our betters and superiors must be restored to that place of immunity they enjoy whereby they can use the FBI, IRS and other government vehicles to overturn elections and keep the racist rabble down.
Above all, we need to restore a GOP that exists to lose honorably. We cant be divisive by daring to campaign or trying to win. Calling uncontrolled immigration into a U.S. welfare state a bad idea, is a bad idea.
Cheap Labor Uber alle!!
Eisenhower would have won as a Democrat or a Republican. The same is true of Trump, except that today’s Democrats are openly Marxist pagans, and would not have let him run as one of them.
The DEMS and GOPERS both wanted Ike to be their presidential candidate and Ike really wasn't much of a GOPer at all! Add to that, at the end of Truman's presidency BOTH parties were anti-Commie...so it was hardly a GOP "thing", nor Ike's idea to be one too; it was what the majority of Americans agreed with/thought!
Nixon expanded the GOP role and drew the most people toward the GOP; even blacks! The Upper Middle Class GOP woman, from the South Side of Chicago, Ill. was who nominated Mr. Nixon, at the GOP Convention, as the GOP Convention in '68; a fact that few people even know about now...sadly.
Trump is a Reagan GOPer, exceeding even Reagan in some aspects! And President trump is expanding the numbers of blacks and "Hispanics" in the GOP voter column.
Actually, given the Euro-trash believe in open borders that will, not maybe, but will result in a hostile mooselimb take-over, and the commies in China. Who exactly are our true friends in this world - you know, those countries that respect individual rights and freedom?
The world needs the US more than the US needs them.
Raphael was the better Turtle anyway.
Reagan tried to end the illegal invasion. He made his common mistake, trusting Congress to keep its word.
And a complete MORON, who knows NO factual political history at all, to boot.
SPOT ON !
Little Italy has been deeply saddened by Donatelli’s rhetoric.
Ironically it seems Trump has abandoned his tough stance on China. Did someone get to him?
FUFD
Perhaps this dude ought to do a quick search on Eisenhower and Operation Wetback in which he had about 11.3 million illegals rounded up and deported. IIRC it was/is largest deportation in history.
I will admit what I don’t know - and frankly I know nothing really about Ike.
Nixon however seems to me sold the USA out - on China and the creation of a fiat based currency system.
The country would be better off today if Pat Buchanan had gotten the nomination instead of Bush. The Globalist can all join the Dems for all I care.
Yes, pure nonsense. Trump is a follow-on to Reagan. He’s making America Great Again, something Reagan would have endorsed and saluted.
I’m seeing too many Italian last names attached to VERY stupid and traitorous people.
It doesn’t make sense to me for ANYBODY from Western European descent to hate Trump so much.
I don’t know what they’re thinking.
I’m used to Staten Island where almost every Italian I know is conservative. Wee gave Trump 57 percent and that’s only because obama’s sons and daughters flood the north shore of the island.
Or you’d be looking at 75 percent for Trump.
Oh well. As long as he wins again in 2020 I’ll be happy
