New York (CNN Business)Dick's Sporting Goods considered stopping all gun sales in early 2018. A shooting at the high school in Parkland, Florida, had killed 17 people. And the company was shocked into action.
"We did have a conversation about that," CEO Ed Stack told CNN Business earlier this year. "At the time we felt it was a part of our DNA and we should stay in it. So many people in the country are law-abiding citizens who use firearms to hunt, to use from a recreation standpoint. We didn't think it was right to exit the business completely."
That could be changing. Dick's, one of the country's biggest gun retailers, has been quietly testing the water on whether to pull out entirely from what it calls the "hunt" business, including firearms. An announcement with the results of the test is expected Thursday, when it is set to report quarterly results. America is again debating gun control after a recent wave of shootings — including one on August 3 at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas. The debate has drawn new scrutiny on the legal sale of guns.

I tend to withhold ‘boycott/controversy fallout’ judgment until a few months or a season changeover has passed and you are correct.
In addition, now that Golf Galaxy and Dick’s are one and the same they are opening ‘pair’ locations where the golf side of Dick’s is Golf Galaxy ie branded as such.
Despite the hype and advertising (billboards etc) both sides are deserted.
Standalone Dick’s stores are worse. They can try to bluff their way through but a couple of piece of evidence:
1) They’re into the stack-em-high-and-sell-em-cheap ethos. They’re less about sporting goods ie athletic wear now and more about ‘crap with a logo you wear sitting around at home.’ No doubt this is the so-called urban market playing a role but Dick’s has a lot of pull with adidas & Nike and are obviously telling them to produce cheap polyester junk under the rubric of performance fabrics. It pulls, it pills, it fades, it loses its shape.
2) No customers...and no staff. Entire departments - including shoes where help is a must to get a size - have no staffers. You see the odd person walking the the floor but they are usually tidying up racks etc. As with other grind joints, a single register is open while the rest sit idle.
Their quarterly and annual reports must look like a train wreck.
The primary reason for gun ownership, it to safeguard your other rights. The biggest abuser of firearms is government.
Doesn’t matter to me. I quit shopping there a while ago.
I hope they do. The local Dicks has a chunk of a nice shopping center in my town. I’m hoping that when it closes, the replacement store will be one I actually shop at.

Never even been in a Dick’s. As far as I’m concerned, Dick’s should stop selling. Period. Just go away, as in Dick’s is not needed and won’t be missed.
Real gun people stop going into Dick’s, so they only have the Fudds at this point in time.

I thought they already have stopped. The Dick’s here is perpetually empty, maybe one or two cars in front but their parking lot is empty. Sportsmans warehouse; Cabelas is always full.
He sure was a great gun salesman. I wonder if he got any kickbacks from any gun manufacturers? He should have, seeing as how he helped their business.

35,000 people die in Motor Vehicle Accidents every year. I guess Auto Dealership’s should rethink selling them.
