The 1972 Act is the vehicle that sees regulations flow into UK law directly from the EU’s lawmaking bodies in Brussels.
The announcement of the Act’s repeal marks a historic step in returning lawmaking powers from Brussels to the UK. We are taking back control of our laws, as the public voted for in 2016.
The repeal of the European Communities Act 1972 will take effect when Britain formally leaves the EU on October 31.
Speaking after signing the legislation that will crystallise in law the upcoming repeal of the ECA, the Secretary of State for Exiting the EU Steve Barclay said:
This is a clear signal to the people of this country that there is no turning back - we are leaving the EU as promised on October 31, whatever the circumstances - delivering on the instructions given to us in 2016.
The votes of 17.4 million people deciding to leave the EU is the greatest democratic mandate ever given to any UK Government. Politicians cannot choose which public votes they wish to respect. Parliament has already voted to leave on 31 October. The signing of this legislation ensures that the EU Withdrawal Act will repeal the European Communities Act 1972 on exit day.
The ECA saw countless EU regulations flowing directly into UK law for decades, and any government serious about leaving on October 31 should show their commitment to repealing it.
That is what we are doing by setting in motion that repeal. This is a landmark moment in taking back control of our laws from Brussels.

The bottle fiasco was driven by Italy and Spain - the main producers of olive oil. Along with Greece and Spain, Italy had supported the measures as a way of protecting its producers and fighting fraudulent practices involving inferior oil being passed off as something better.
From news articles about it
“Bad news for the ‘Made in Italy’ agricultural sector and for consumer protection. The commission’s U-turn is a defeat for all the countries that have always fought hard against fraud and scams at the table,” said the confederation of Italian farmers in Italian newspapers
“Once again we must observe that Europe has rejected a regulation supported by some 15 countries, among which were the main producers like Italy and Spain, and has instead rewarded those who had opposed it from the start such as the northern [member] states, starting with Germany, the Netherlands and Britain,” it added.
The new Italian government was also displeased. “For us this is a cultural and legal battle,” said Nunzia De Girolamo, agriculture minister. The new rules would have improved the system, she said.
Paolo de Castro, chair of the European parliament’s commission for agriculture and rural development, criticised the move, which he said had “stunned” him.
Just like the British or French or Germans with specific rules on food products to promote their own producers, the Italians and Spaniards and Greeks tried the same in 2013.
The Brits with the Germans vetoed it — that’s how the veto system works.
The UK hasn’t offered any deal.
remember that the UK agreed with the other countries back in november on a deal.
Now the UK has nothing new except that it doesn’t want the NI workaround and as Priti Patel said today - the borders will be closed.
there was no other real contentious point brought up about the withdrawal agreement.
Thanks for the history in a nutshell.
it was a request to investigate brought to the eu commission - just as with the US federal energy regulations, but the commission has to investigate if any of the eu countries bring forward a request to check or even if a certain number of citizens raise a petition. A study into the proposals has been drafted, but no legislation has been brought forward. If any such legislation was brought forward the eu parliament could amend it or the 28 (soon to be 27) countries could veto it.
To be fair - the Brits voted to leave in May 2016 - half a year before President Trump’s election
The UK’s Priti Patel said she’d put up a barrier - the question is whether it’s in the Irish sea or between NI and RoI
Though I think the Tories are dead no matter what - they have lost 48% of the populace forever and among the rest, they will lose to the UKIP and Brexit party.
The EU didn't "force them to accept a lot of immigrants" As per the EU rules - to which the UK signed up to, all citizens of EU countries can freely travel and work (note: there are rules about the latter - I'll come to it). After 2004 nearly 2 million central europeans moved to the UK - but that's because the UK government didn't implement the EU regulations that allow EU countries to have put up blocks for 4 years on new country entrants -- Germany did this, the UK government didn't. The net result was that the UK grew faster than Germany from 2004 to 2012. The UK got an opt-out from the Schengen zone, so non-EU citizens who were residents of other EU countries could NOT travel to the UK (leave alone work) without a UK visa. This was another special treatment the UK got Your statement "forcing the UK..." isn't quite true. And the "who became public charges and security problems" were the immigrants the UK allowed on it's own volition
Communists share Clement Attlees visceral opposition to Euro-federalism and the surrender of our countrys sovereignty. To this we add a long history of opposition to the actually existing slash-and-burn capitalist economics that has stripped our country of productive industry and deprived generations of young people of productive skills. In keeping with this, Corbyn was pro-Leave
It is precisely because we want an alternative to Britains crazily unbalanced and financialised economy that we campaigned for Britain to leave the neoliberal EU and in doing so free ourselves from the anti-union judgments of the ECJ, the restrictions on state aid to industry, the obstacles to public ownership and the drive to militarise the EU.
The EU is an irreformable instrument for impoverishing the continental periphery and the working people of each country to the benefit of a predatory class whose wealth increases with every one of capitalisms succeeding crises.
Communists want a Peoples Brexit. Unconstrained by EU treaties, single market rules and directives, a left-led Labour government could develop a worker-led industrial strategy; aid industry, invest in training, youth and jobs, social welfare, housing, education and health services; and take the transport, energy and postal service profiteers back into public ownership.
Corbyn has always been a flaming red commie. he has always hated the EU for standing in the way of his communist paradise.
Parliament doesn’t need to “endorse” a no-deal. They can just talk round and round and delay doing anything until October 31. If the UK does nothing, it automatically crashes out on October 31. The EU is praying that they do that.
The Scots already have another layer - Westminster.
They are far less independent as part of the British union compared to Ireland which is part of the european union.
Are you kidding me? the rest of the EU can’t wait for the UK to stop begging for extensions. Things have changed since November 2018. Now the other countries just want the UK out.
A hard, no-deal Brexit seems 95% sure. There is still a 4% chance of another delay and a 0.5% chance of a cancellation of Brexit. Literally anything is possible as we see in the Brexit fiasco.
I personally hope for a hard, no-deal Brexit. No half-way house, no room for excuses. Let’s see how things are after that — and I don’t mean in Nov, Dec (too soon) - but we need to recap this in 2022 at the earliest.
I personally see a dip in the LSE in November, followed by a recovery but only to September 2019 levels.
There will be announcements of trade deals, but when they will be approved by both sides (whether US-UK or Can-UK or other) is anyone’s guess.
in which they serve tea
A funny aside - "tea" is either tea/the/tee or cha/chai depending on whether it came from china via land (chai) or via sea (tea)
The only language that is the exception is polish (trust the damned poles to be unique) with herbata
That’s the best post about post BRexit realities that I’ve read.
Unbiased and makes sense.
I used to love my tea with a spot of milk. But since moving here I got used to black tea with no milk, no sugar and no lemon. and I love it. York tea is glorious for that - nectar of the gods
I am biased.
The thing is - November won’t be 1945 but it won’t be a glorious land either.
The one thing I can predict for november 1 IF brexit happens is that all sides will find vindication.
This sounds like one of the very first governmental moves that must take place if a Brexit is going to be pursued.
You mean to tell me that Theresa May never even got this far?
Wow. Many Brits said all along, that May never had any actual intention of making it happen. She liked the other parts of being a Prime Minister. This was never high on her Goal Sheets. The English are far more patient that American voters to have tolerated her slow motion dance of the veils for so long.
Herbata. Cha is pretty different too.
And the samovar is Beautiful.
Never saw or heard of it but I think I will get one.
Really a striking piece.
I see that they go for anywhere from 50 bucks to 10,000.
The ones for around 200 to 300 are very nice and I think a beautiful addition to any room.
And no, I’m not gay :)
“Not that there’s anything wrong with that” Seinfeld :)
