FULL TITLE: Google’s decision to develop ‘military AI’ in China is one giant middle finger to the United States: Peter Thiel
(NationalSentinel) A decision by Google to end a contract with the Pentagon to develop artificial intelligence while deciding instead to build an AI campus in China is a massive slap in the face to the U.S., where the corporation is based, and a potential national security threat to America, according to one of Silicon Valley’s few conservatives.
In a recent op-ed, Paypal co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Peter Thiel made it clear that AI is being developed for military purposes primarily, and that it is a game-changer in terms of providing countries with hyper-advanced mil-tech.
But while U.S. corporations used to make business decisions that were also good for the country, Google isn’t interested in doing that and in fact appears to be consciously siding with a potential adversary.
“The Silicon Valley attitude sometimes called ‘cosmopolitanism’ is probably better understood as an extreme strain of parochialism, that of fortunate enclaves isolated from the problems of other places — and incurious about them,” he writes. In the 1950s, the cliché was that “what’s good for General Motors is good for the country.” Google makes no such claim for itself; “it would be too obviously false,” Thiel added.

They’re selling tech developed in the USA. Some of these sobs need to be locked up.
This is no surprise. Google is more comfortable with brutal tyrants than with America.
Surveillance is their thing, so of course they would be all in with China.
I know that American weapons manufacturers often sell their goods to other countries, but I’m assuming it’s only allowed when it doesn’t present a risk to the U.S. Isn’t there a mechanism to stop Google from doing this, lest it be espionage?
Gotta tell ya, knowing what we know of China lifting technology like it does, Google is undeniably playing the part of a traitor organization by doing this.
Trump should sequester that technology here.

Something I’ve wondered for a while .... would it make a difference if duckduckgo.com became the predominant search engine? Is it time to quit using Google?
This happened a year ago and i know of know response from the US government. In refusing the uS military and working with a Chinese university tied to the chines military google is no longer a friendly US company and should be treated aa traitors and 86d from the US. The government should drop any and all google contracts and programs.

Any of our advanced weaponry (fighter jets ect) that are sold to other countries, is purposefully degraded in capability.
And try to convince owners / webmasters of sites you use to abandon the 'free web tools' (like visitor statistics) on their sites that Google has them addicted to.
Even then, unless millions of other people do it too, it won't hurt Google noticeably. But at least your personal security will be somewhat enhanced.
Software (zeroes and ones) can't be sequestered anywhere. Somebody somewhere orders 101 widgets of catalog number 1100 from some company in China and now China has those ones and zeroes. Most of the building blocks to do AI are open source including Google's own tensorflow. There's also specialized hardware to speed things up which could potentially be restricted, but commodity hardware will work too.
The government has had mixed success at software export restrictions. Back in the 80's and early 90's the encryption software restrictions were a debacle. American companies had to apply for permits to export encryption that they had to import because no American open source was available because that was illegal. Now it's all open source and the Chinese can keep encrypt their transmissions and data just like anyone else (provided they don't make "mistakes").
China also has leapt forward with quantum encryption and even has a quantum communications satellite. AFAIK, we do not. The development of truly autonomous AI will be a lot harder but they can probably do it. Japan tried in the 80's in software factories and failed miserably. Chinese culture is not as rigid as Japanese but they have some challenges too.
In short, trying to export control AI is probably the best way to ensure that the center of AI research will be elsewhere (e.g. Europe).
Yeah well- the government will have the last laugh as google steps over the line and brings federal regulations and oversight down on them for betraying the American public
