Lowe’s Lays Off Thousands of Store Workers
WSJ ^ | 08/01/19 | Sarah Nassauer

Lowe’s Cos. told thousands of store workers this week their jobs were being eliminated as the company outsourced tasks such as assembling barbecue grills and janitorial services.

The home-improvement chain notified maintenance staff and assemblers that put together grills, wheelbarrows and other products that they were being laid off, according to the company and employees. Those roles will be taken over by third-party companies

Yes but if you want or need those shelf hanger pins now, on line will not provide them.

I’ve learned to always look on line and then learn the aisle and bin location of the item.

Often, the bin contains lots of items packed in small containers that are very easy to overlook. Knowing the bin allows you to beam in on the location and sort it out of the clutter of small items.

The problem is remembering the aisle and bin number. I have learned to make a note on my phone to assist my failing memory.

“”Outsourcing” means that they will fire US citizens and hire illegal contractors who will work for half the price.”

Probably not for a company of that size and profile. For a number of years, the (large) company that I worked for would hire perfectly American contractors for cleaning/trash, etc., but their workers didn’t speak English. The lawyers stepped in and told the suits that they’re risking jail time with that approach, so they were gone. Now their replacements are still Hispanic, but their English is fine...so most likely legal.

My guess is that they require the work to be done in spurts and then they don’t have much for those guys to do. So why not, instead, hire temps for a month or two and then dump them will their work is done.

No what it means is they have to drug test to meet insurance requirements as the leadership elites in this country have put everyone in limbo with federal laws and state laws not in sych. Many companies are in this bind.

LOOK HERE FOOL!!

Also federal laws and some state laws do not permit the hiring of illegals so they do not, however the policies of the elites flood the country with illegal aliens thus blocking jobs for citizens who need a bit of a push.

So they hire companies who are owned by LEGAL citizens to meet guidelines and they cannot be held responsbile for who these countries hire.

This is our elite establishment at work on their agenda to harm our country, take jobs away from our citizens, and harm good businesses.

I’ll add - working as a contractor I found to be an advantage, I didn’t have to attend any of the required employee ‘training’ programs like cultural sensitivity training, “wellness” walks (I rode bike and jogged on my own time) and the like ...

You were lucky; multiple times I’ve been sent to the wrong side of the store completely (where I’d eventually find an older employee who would send me in the right direction).

Working in retail is hard here; customers are often rude jackasses. My wife watched a ghettopotamus berate a cashier in Wal-Mart for something that was in no way the cashier’s fault, and felt that had to be the lowest thing someone could do. It is hard enough being on your feet all day in a high-volume store; having some beast spending taxpayer money while abusing you must be very testing...

It is my experience that Lowes hires independent contractors to do installation and set up work. Ditto deliveries of some items.

It turns out, a good reliable independent contractor can easily get “covered up” Havind Lowes as a client provides steady profitable stream of work. The contractor is not a low paid Mexican but a reliable person who does good work.

A janitor or grill assembler doesn’t. That isn’t because cleaning the place or assembling a grill aren’t valuable contributions. It’s because regulations add so much overhead that the people doing those tasks are not adding anything to the bottom line. Their tasks can be more cheaply exported to an outside supplier. The outside suppliers will be smaller and therefore subject to less regulation, so they can actually make a profit doing those tasks. Whether the outside supplier hires citizens or illegals is a separate issue. But it is not an issue Lowe’s is concerned with.

Expanding on what you said: every regular employee is a potential lawsuit for "discrimination", "hostile work environment", etc, etc. The potential liability costs are high.

So for grill assembly (for example), you get some outside small company. Maybe the manager's friend's nephew grabs a few friends and they make a bid. If somebody is unhappy over discrimination, sexual harassment, whatever, the little 10-man company dissolves, and re-forms under another name, minus the troublemakers.

My business plan is built on a model where I only hire contractors and part-time staff. And my staff are generally family members or close friends.

Mine too. I am avoiding full time employees. My employees are part time, friends and family. I have recently discovered a Federal program that allows me to bring on and train an employee at no cost for up to 450 hours. After that is done I can have them move up to a program where the government pays 75% of their wages for an additional 750 hours. The first one I hired under this program was useless. The second was a little better. The third was great and I wanted to keep him, but he wants to go back to school. Just started our fourth...by appearances he is sketch, but after working with him a few days he is meticulous and conscientious. We shall see.

This thread indicates that Home Depot and Lowes are in fact more alike than different at the theoretical corporate organizational level.

The differences can be at the local level and the store management rather than the corporate direction

I like Lowes too. In my case, when I needed PVC fittings, there’s were neat and organized, the other store (which I also like), not so much!

I won’t bash them either. While others here have some fondness for mom and pop stores, my only memories (from high school mainly) when walking the aisles and looking at stuff, was being told to get out - because they figured I would start pocketing things. I learned way more, faster, by walking the aisles at Lowes and HD than any other source, back when those stores first started opening, which was well before the web.

The exact opposite is true here in Gainesville, FL.

I used to shop at Home Depot all the time in Arizona, until I retired and moved to Florida. They are resistant and skeptical to give military members and veterans their 10% discount. It's almost like pulling teeth to get it. Screw that.

Lowes, on the other hand, generously gives their 10% discount to us and thanks us for our service every time we shop there.

I haven't been back to Home Depot after my initial couple of visits and realized the difference in company policies towards providing the military discounts. Both companies have different attitudes about the discount and I go with the one that doesn't make me feel bad to get it.

I don't want to feel like I'm begging HD for the discount when Lowes gladly offers it.

Is any Lowe’s selling so many wheelbarrows and barbecue grills that assembling them is a full time job?

Any single Lowes? Probably not.

That means it's probably more efficient to have a crew which handles the assembly for all the Lowes stores in an area, visiting each store in turn.

Eliminate drug testing and get ready to start paying higher premiums to cover the risk of heavy objects falling off the top shelf, as well as other risks of a low grade work force.

Good point. My preference is HD as their stores readily accept the VET status on my drivers license.
