A Texas police officer trying to shoot at a barking dog killed the woman he was there to help during a welfare check, authorities say.
A caller reported a woman passed out in a grassy area in Arlington on Thursday evening. Arlington police officers, the fire department and EMS were dispatched to the scene to conduct a welfare check, officials said.
When the officer approached the woman, he noticed an unrestrained dog nearby, the Arlington Police Department said in a statement.

The article did not say that the dog was barking, it was just loose. Big deal.

Because it charged at him.

That’s the money statement of this post.

Not only did the cop shoot at the dog, he shot at it
multiple times. Spray and pray? Either this cop is pathologically afraid of dogs, or he just likes to shoot dogs.
Either way, Im sure an internal investigation will clear him of any wrongdoing.
Side note: Im told that many police departments have gotten rid of the old wooden nightstick. This is one instance where that weapon would have been the go-to device.

That sounds entirely possible. Long before we met, my wife had a dog that was very protective. She got really sick once, and the dog would not let anyone at all approach to help. Fortunately for me, she survived.

I guess he took care of her “welfare”. Seriously, what is it with shooting dogs? I guess I will reserve judgement to see the video and how much of a threat the dog really might have been, but it does not look good for the cop based on what’s presented here.

Sorry,
I didn’t read the article far enough. Initially it said he noticed a loose dog nearby.
Later it said that the dog was barking.
As others said on this thread, makes sense, that maybe the dog belonged to the woman and it was just trying to get her help.
The policeman could have talked to the dog, to calm him down first, at least, instead of getting his gun and shoot at it.
Wasn’t even a good shot, he shot the poor woman lying in the grass.

The article says “unrestrained” dog. It does NOT say...Charging, Barking or biting. The dog was just standing or sitting there........A case of officer target practice.

Larry Johnson, 20, has worked at this Walmart for 5 months. He would see the
couple under the tree and described the dog as looking like a small pit bull mixed
with another breed. He thinks the dog is a puppy.

The U.S. Post Office should offer a welfare check service.
They are trained to deal with dogs without shooting them. They already hand deliver the literal welfare checks.
