California may be on the verge of eliminating single-family zoning statewide. This is huge. And its a sign of how quickly the politics around housing and land use have shifted in just the last year.
...
Senate Bill 50 San Francisco Sen. Scott Wieners bill to allow denser, taller housing ... Single-family houses could be converted to four-unit buildings, by right, anywhere in the state.
That is, a property owner could subdivide or remodel a house to turn it into four apartments. Or a developer could build a fourplex on a vacant single-family lot.
...
Lets just pause on the fact that a bipartisan group of lawmakers voted in favor of a bill that would allow apartments pretty much anywhere in California.
...
Last year, the Minneapolis City Council voted to eliminate single-family zoning and instead allow duplexes and triplexes to be built on lots reserved for one house. The city enacted the policy so it would be easier to build affordable, denser communities, but also to help integrate neighborhoods that are still segregated as a result of discriminatory housing practices dating back decades. Strict single-family zoning was often adopted as a way to segregate neighborhoods ..
Planners in Charlotte, N.C., are looking to eliminate single-family zoning
...
Seattle and Portland have considered rezoning single-family lots or allowing up to four-unit buildings in single-family neighborhoods. One Oregon lawmaker proposed allowing fourplexes on single-family lots in any city in the state with more than 10,000 residents.
Even Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti is warming to the idea. He told Times reporter Liam Dillon earlier this month that the city was looking at the Minneapolis model of allowing triplexes on single-family lots as a way to build more housing

Yes, please add me to your list. This is just another reason to get the He!! out of California. It’s been a great ride. My husband and I both grew up in Santa Clara County. Our parents moved here from LA in the 50’s. Our kids were born here and it’s been paradise. We’ve remodeled over the last few years and our house is perfect, the yard is perfect, the weather is perfect. 30+ years of great neighbors with Christmas parties, neighborhood BBQs, backyard parties, camping trips, watching each others kids and homes and pets. Now the neighborhood is turning over with people out-bidding by $200K on home prices more than local couples hoping to move-up. They’re friendly enough but keep to themselves and aren’t interested in “neighborly” activities. I suppose all neighborhoods turn-over but our kids grew up in paradise and it’s no longer true.
It is really shameful how the government (local/state) has become militant bureaucrats. We just received a notice from PGE scolding us because last month we used FOUR TIMES our “allocated energy stipend” and would be punished by extra surcharges. WTF??? Who decided what our “allocated energy stipend” was? What does that even mean? Don’t even get me started on the little Nazis in the Planning department, they’re your mortal enemy if you’re a tax-paying citizen trying to improve your home, neighborhood, support local businesses/contractors, raise property values, they treat you like a worm.
The cons are just too numerous to outweigh the pros anymore. Retiring in February to “somewhere” and no, we won’t be bringing “those” California values.
They have to put the 100 million third worlders somewhere.
We feel for conservatives in California, but there is nothing anybody outside the state can do for you and there isn’t enough of you guys in the state that can stop this. It’s time to leave, if you can.it is going to get much worse.
I heard a theory that stated that the oligarchs wanted to crash California so that it depopulated so they can own it
socialism...communism????

Cant afford it? Move to Alabama North Carolina.
Been here lately...once upon a time my friend you right for sure...but now beside with all the liberal and illegals still grooming us her and moving here too much has changed already for me! Look at what they have done to Asheville and Wilmington...of course Chapel was already a sh*t hole all along!!!
My wife is from Taiwan. Her family left Shanghai after WWII. We went back and found the old house. It had been divided so four families could live in it. Of course there was still only one kitchen and one bathroom.
In other words: Get ready to share your house with some Mexicans.

Well i hope it only applies to new buildings. I have had enough liberal California invaders come south n bring their disease. Are legislators exempting themselves?
Astute observation owl.
Car thieves silly.
No; they are planning to eliminate PRIVATE ownership of homes.
Economically; it makes more sense for a new, young family to have a DOUBLE built.
Live in one side while your renters on the other side pay MOST of the mortgage costs!
So WHY are so many SINGLES being built??
Not all; just the government workers.
Along the Gulf Coast; we merely have to wait until the next hurricane comes along to wipe out the single dwellings.
The a developer (or 12!) will rush in to give them an offer they can’t refuse and put up high rise condos.
Of course; there are those codgers who REFUSE the ‘offer’ and you can still the old concrete floor plans sitting in the sand today.
