No one of any age out here that I know falls for a scam- here, only known people and your customers call you for a reason-and those numbers are known-if it is none of the above, don’t answer and block the number-easy as can be. Also, if anyone hears of a new e-mail or phone scam, they share that info with everyone they know in the area so word gets around fast...
The best policy, in my opinion is to just not pick up if the caller’s number isn’t one you are familiar with...
I got a couple of those I need money to get home scams by email, but it was a very poor attempt and was pretty obviously a con artist.
I received a Social Security call from an Ohio phone number that claimed that my SSN had been compromised. I informed them that my son is an FBI agent and wanted to talk to them. Click!

When it comes to the elderly, I wouldnt say dumb. Instead Id say unaware. Many years ago when these scams were just starting, a good friend of mine (not an old guy) got a message on his answering machine from the FBI. They wanted him to to verify some personal information.
Well, he was very upset. Fortunately, I had already heard about this scam. So I told him to ignore the call, and not call back. Who knows what he would have done had I not said anything? It was the FBI, after all.
Search a company listed as CPL.
They have a program that calls all phone numbers.
If it is a working cell phone and not a tablet they sell that number.
Last time I looked the were selling the numbers for 5k.
I bet they have lobbyist.
I received an email with multiple recipients a number of years ago from a woman whom I barely knew asking for money because she had been robbed while on vacation in Europe.
It was actually quite convincing, but since I really did not know her, I just deleted. Shortly, I received a correction email from one of her friends. The email assured us that the woman was indeed vacationing in Europe but was not in need of help.
We need McCall. We need the equalizer
A phone scammer was hilarious when she tried to convince me that I had won the Publisher’s Clearing House.
She was doing her damnedest to sound so excited for me.
I said... Lady, you should be ashamed of yourself... and I then hung up.
My Mom was in her 80s. She laughed these idiots off like it was a sport to her.
I’m an oldie and get these calls a lot. I have caller ID and just don’t answer. One left a message asking me to call back with my gas/electric bill in hand. It was a local number — not the 800 number such companies use.
I would love to answer sometime-— saying “” FBI agent Jones speaking”” or the same using SSA. Bet I’d get a fast hangup!
WOW!!!
Old people these days listen to Classic Rock.
“I tell them that Im employed as a Special Investigator for the Attorney General and ask if they want to continue.”
That’s a great idea! I just might try that.
I often hear my local news warn about the latest scam.
The dumbest one I get is the IRS one that goes straight to my voicemail. It’s such a robotic warning. It’s so laughable and often the ending is cut off.
I swear, I’ve gotten that one at least 10 times.
Ahem.
I often work after 5.
I probably won't be calling you, though.
Heres one I thought was amazing. They would only take gift cards at the courthouse. https://www.wral.com/-how-could-we-be-so-stupid-local-couple-warns-others-after-falling-for-jury-duty-scam/18062779/
Lobbyist run America.
That is why they hate organized crime.
They hate competition.
Robo calls feed Washington.
If those bastard s were not paying to play they would have been gone years ago
Unfortunately, as people age, some will have memory issues or other problems.
These scammers are scum, preying on the sick. That’s really what they’re doing.
“If the number isn’t in my contact list the call goes to voicemail.”
ditto.
there’s even an entire free website designed to manage a setup like that for those who are customers of voip.ms:
My dad had a list of fake call numbers....he would say"thank you but call me back on my other number"
