The Senate Aging Committee heard testimony Wednesday from witnesses and government officials explaining the impact of criminals that are unseen – but heard – over phone lines.

One of those people on the other line was Marjorie Jones, an 82-year-old woman who committed suicide after giving up her life's savings to phone scammers.
“They told her she had won a large cash prize, and all she had to do was pay the taxes and fees,” Angela Stancik, Jones’ granddaughter, explained to lawmakers.

My parents get a bit honked off when I am mean to the scammers that call and I happen to be there to answer their phone. (no caller ID, they don’t want it. They feel obligated to answer every call. sigh)
Personally, I would have no problem leaving these criminals alone in a room with the people they scammed being given a baseball bat with which to mete out justice.
Sad.
When I was younger, I would have focused on the financial insecurity aspect of this story, the fear, as to why she did this.
As I get older, I can see another greater aspect, that she may just have been tired of living amongst such selfish, deceitful, and foolish people.
But your not an old person, they prey on the weak.

Really? I listen exclusively to oldies stations on the radio. And I have never heard a single public service ad about this.
Years ago, before cell phones, I helped shut down a "boiler room" fraud operation allegedly selling oil and gas interests. One of their sources of phone numbers was a list of people on social security. Disgusting.
I’ve had everything from “Microsoft” to the IRS and credit card zero percent offers and it’s always a boiler room operation in India.
I like to play with them and string them along as long as possible to keep them from victimizing others.
I am surprised that people are dumb enough to fall for these.
I’m sure there’s enough volunteers amongst us to find out who these people are. Might have to pass a law to go through us first IN PERSON before anyone of a certain age signs up for anything. It would put a stop to it big time.
The law would involve any transaction over $100.
My wife and I get anywhere from 4-8 robocalls almost every day...We don’t answer and the message is always the same...Insurance deal now available for a short time only...
We only answer if we recognize the number or the voice...
that’s called “neighbor spoofing”, it’s a common technique
There need to be PSA’s in newspapers and on Fox News and during M*A*S*H reruns.

Actually that would make a wonderful reality show.
I think others that should be in that room are people who have tried to use law enforcement to falsely tey to murder someone they dont like by SWATTING them.
Also anyone who has lied about paternity and anyone who has accused anyone of a serious false crime.
Any morons involved in road rage incidents, in the chair. Batter up.
Any idiot attacking people working in restaurants because thy dont make breakfast at 6pm or they ran out of something or only gave them three ketchups instead of 10.
I think perpetual, habitual shoplifters also ought to be strapped in a chair and the people they stole from get a baseball bat smash on each hand.
Would be an excellent show. Ratings through the flipping roof.
They target that group because at that age many of them are starting to suffer from dementia. They are taking advantage of a group of people whose mind is beginning to slip.
Pay the national debt...I don’t know why, that all reminds me of some movie...heh, maybe “Idiocracy”!
